After becoming more familiar with the condition (have acquaintances that have had/are going through treatment for it), I have learned that in many cases, depression isn't something one can just "snap out of" on his/her own at will. To attribute the condition to being selfish and simplistically characterize it as a "self-absorbed mental state" or "looking out for #1" is, to put it mildly, inaccurate.

Hmmm, I don't recall saying "snap out of it". Learning to not focus on yourself is a difficult task. We live in the most self absorbed society in the world. Being American is being self-absorbed. My right, my role, my freedom, my choices, etc. etc and preserving each of those is ones duty as a democratic voting American. No wonder we have such an epidemic of depsression and a plethora of drugs being sold for the condition. I know many people, including myself who's chronic depression was cured, not by drugs, but by not focusing on one's own pain and problems. It doesn't solve your problems. But helps you realize what life is all about... namely, not yourself.

There's no "snap" about it. Its hard work. But the process itself is as liberating as the end result. WIth all due respect, you made an unrealted assumption about what I said

Hit the gym like the others said.
Also helps to yell at the walls and/or anyone that happens to wander pass nearby.
Or you can do like me and just sit there on the floor and suck it in. Take all the anger and push it into your gut. Take a breath, clench your jaw, shut your eyes, and just let out a primal growl/roar. If you do it right, your whole body should give a violent shake or two.

Dear God, I have unhealthy habits
Maybe it's best not to listen to me... except for the gym part.

You really dont want to know what I do, erm, what I want to do when Im depressed... Hell, you dont want to know what I want to do 24/7/365... but lets just say its a permenent solution to a temorary problem... well, so Ive been telling myself its temporary for the past 10 years.

I usually take sleeping pills and sleep... go running, play soccer... hang out with friends. Etc. I never really get depressed over girls, mainly because most of them suck, and Id rather not have them than have them. However, there are exceptions, and maybe you haven't found that exception? I know I havent, nor do I plan to... ever.

F the world.

I play first person shooters, that is unless you absolutely suck at video games, then that may make it worse.
