Screw "The Shop"

They're a bunch of con artists. If you dont know what The Shop is, its a shop in south city for ricers by ricers. So i took my car there awhile back because after replacing my blown turbo my car was still running like crap. They supposedly did a compression test and said cyl 2 had 0 compression and that i needed a new motor. Being the cheap guy that i am i said no and my car sat in my back yard for 6 months while i paid off credit cards so id have free income to fix my car.

So i tow my car into work today and do my own compression test. I have 150 at all cylinders. The only problem with cly 2 was a cracked spark plug that wasnt firing. Im very happy that i wont have spend $3000 on a sti short block but im also very very pissed off at The Shop for taking my $80 and for trying to get another couple thousand out of me.

Sucks to hear. At least it only cost you $80 and some downtime from your car.

Theres a reason there are 2 or 3 shops people on here recommend over and over again. And "The Shop" was never one of them.

I only went because a old coworker suggested it.

Also ive learned the only mechanic i can trust is my self. The rest are just trying to take my money.

There's at least one exception (in my extensive experience with them) that I know of in Novato. They're a well-known and respected shop whose job (and reputation) it is to fix Subarus only two ways: Right and The FIRST Time.

If I count the money they've convinced me NOT to spend, I'm certain that I can exceed the money you would have spent on an unneeded engine installation.

they're probably the ones that busted the plug then said it had zero compression.

at least during the wait, you got to pay off credit cards.

That's extremely shady! In light of such bad news, the customer should always be present and witness the test being performed.

Actually yes this and a lack of speeding tickets are the big upsides of the time off.
