Sciatic Nerve pain
Do any of you have Sciatic Nerve pain? If so, how do you relieve the pain?
I was going to a chiropractor for a while but it didn't seem to solve the problem. I've talked to actual Dr's about it but none of them have offered any solutions. I also do the stretches that the chiropractor recommends... but again. Nothing.
I haven't worked out hard or had any hard cardio sessions in a while which seems to keep it at ease. I did the P90x Ab Ripper yesterday and I woke up with my nerve on fire. I iced it and took some Motrin which helped a little but it still hurts.
I want to be able to workout again without worrying about a flare up.
Any suggestions?

Whatever you do, don't get dependent on pain meds (narcotics). I've been studying addiction and drug use in class and did you know that you can come physically dependant (if you stop, you go through withdraws) after only a week of use (See strong narc pain meds).
Pain meds are meant for the short term, and dealing with chronic pain is a hell of a lot better than being in pain AND addicted/dependent (yes there is a diff). No matter how horrible your pain is, your body will get used to them and you will just have to take them to feel normal.
Drugs are bad, Mmmmhay (well, drug ABUSE is bad)

When I spoke with my Dr. I straight up said, "I don't want pain meds. I want to be pain free." That got me know where though. haha Dr's don't seem to give a **** 90% of the time.
I don't take pain meds or have the desire to mask the problem with pain meds. I usually dont even want to take Motrin.
Thanks for the advice though.

Try a good chiropractic or even acupuncture. I have had friends with lots of pain do each of them and they both have worked.
Personally I have been going to the chiro for a few months now and i no longer have pain in my knee, ankle, or low back. If you want more details LMK. Also, if you go to a chiro go to one who wants to see x-rays, my x-rays were about 100$ to a full set of my back, neck, and hips. The reason i saw x-rays is that that way they can see what is actually going on and not just feel how your body has adapted and guess.

My advice is to try out Yoga. If you can, do some Bikram Yoga for a month and see where you are at. This changed my life. Now, I do some stretches in the morning and night and if I can't sleep and more or less okay. I am the same way - not only do I not want meds for all the obvious reasons, but I just hate to depend on anything really. My issue was a herniated disk at L4 which caused pressure to be put on my sciatic nerve. When I was in physical therapy and my Dr. had prescribed me VIOXX (yes, when people were dying from it) I hated life and could barely walk - couldn't stand still for more than 5min and was popping 800mg Ibuprofen when I couldn't take it. Those days are gone for me and I have not taken a pain killer in many years.

What worked for me: (Took several docs to achieve result)
After years of dealing with my back pain and docs just trying to push meds on me and telling me that they don't know what's wrong with me. Finally, after about 9 different docs I was referred to a specialist who figured out what was wrong with me and why it was happening. That was a CRUCIAL part of the picture. Once they knew why the pain was happening they were able to get me into the right physical therapy program, and as doubtful as I was, it actually helped. I have a handful of very specific exercises that target the exact spot that is in question and as surprising as it sounds, it's working!
The pain is so intolerable at night sometimes, but it's better than the other option... Now I don't take any pain meds and only do my physical therapy (I do quick daily exercises using those elastic band things you can get at any areobics store, I got mine at target for $30... comes with 3 bands in different lengths and resistances. Works GREAT and not bulk/heavy to carry to work or store).
Back docs (Chiro) can only do so much... You either need a new real doctor or a new chiro!

Good for you... Seems as though the docs want to get rid of you more of the time than to help you.

its makes a huge difference. i was told my whole life i had scoliosis, but it turns out one of my legs is a little longer than the other forcing my spine to curve to compensate and my sacrum to turn, casing hip pain. Also it made my neck to curve forward so my head is farther forward than it should, which caused my shoulders to always be tense. And with x-rays you can see for yourself what is wrong. I was able to see the curves and the bone spurs that were forming even though i'm just 22.

Before anyone refers me to "The Union" or any of those other documentaries, I want to point out that the publishing date of these medical reports is much more recent than the release of any of those documentaries.
