Question San Jose Smog Check Suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

Hope all are well and in good health. Just trying to get two cars from out of state smog checked for reg. in cali. My Girlfriends 93 Civic with an aftermarket AXEL back that was welded on for some reason, and 04 STI With K&N Typhoon (missing the carb sticker, bought it used) and Prodrive WRSPort Oval Tip. Any Suggestions? thanks all,

Cheers.

Suggestions regarding what?

The STi won't technically pass smog without the CARB Exemption Order sticker on the K&N intake, although a savvy technician may recognize the Typhoon. All aftermarket intakes that are smog legal in CA must a sticker or other tag with E.O. number. I don't know what a Prodrive WRSPort Oval Tip is but if it is a catback exhaust, these do not change the configuration or operation of the factory downpipe and catalytic converters and are smog-legal in CA. The same goes for the Civic if the exhaust modifications were made after the last factory catalytic converter. Shouldn't matter if it is welded or bolted in, although welded is inconvenient should you need to drop the exhaust for some reason.

As for recommendations of specific smog testing stations, most members will not publicly post the names or locations of test stations that are 'lenient' because they are subject to undercover investigation by the CARB and can be heavily fined (think 4 digits) and lose their license to perform smog tests. Each shop invests a lot of money in leasing the equipment and they would lose this money along with the license. Not worth it for a $50 smog test and certificate.

Thats numbers for the B.A.R., thats the state body that manages the smog check program, they should be able to guide you in gettin the K&N intake to pass.

Shouldn't be a big problem..or you may want to just call K&N and inquire with them in regards to getting a new sticker.

Print this out, should cover you for the STI Intake

It's the closest thing there is....amazingly, it looks like K&N got sloppy and while they requested (and got) exemption for the part on the 02-04 WRX, they never requested it for the STI!!! Only a REALLY **** retentive smog shop would turn it down though. Might pay to call up K&N and have them send you a CARB EO sticker for the intake and see if they ever got it officially EO-numbered for the STI (i.e. the CARB files may be out of date on the CARB website).

BTW, searchable database for CARB EOs is HERE

The catback exhausts aren't an issue. Technically you can pass CA smog with an exhaust that dumps right after the cats!

BTW, getting caught cheating isn't a 4-figure fine for the smog shop...it is a 6 figure fine!!!
