Going off last season's sales, it does get really crowded. But you should still be able to find some good stuff. I've never gotten there the time it opened or before and still scored some good deals. Just depends on what your going there for.
Last year, I rolled in maybe around 11-ish w/ nothing in particular in buy. Like 04Impreza said, it was SUPER crowded.
And the line to pay sucks big time, so plan on waiting for that part of the "experience." Maybe someone else who's been can chime in since I don't recall exactly, but the line for a particular payment form was much shorter. I wanna say it was the cash or check line.
I used a check last year but don't remember if I was in that "express" line b/c I ended looking at the Gravis kicks in the cashier area & hopped outta line. Since it was a "sample" sale, all they had were size 9. I lucked out & came up on 6 pairs for ONLY $50! I still haven't worn one of the pairs yet, and I just recently pulled out the 5th a couple months ago.
Justin & Aaron, maybe we can coordinate our efforts. One holds a place in line while the others shop for a bit, and swapping places so the lineholder can check out something that caught his eye.
I'll text y'all in a bit. Aaron, if you haven't changed your number in the last year or so, I still got it saved.

^^^what he said....
i went last year for the first time and i mistakenly went on the second day and it looked like ROSS threw up a bunch of snow gear all over the place! no good sizes, crap selection, inventory all over the floor and out of place, and crazy lines...i was expecting much better and was disappointed . only good thing about that day was eating at Pier23 based on a recommendation from Guy Fieri and Diners, Driveins, and Dives!! haha

There is a 'College' Tahoe Super Pass which ain't a bad deal for Squaw & Alpine for $349 w/ holiday blackout dates.
Decisions.... decisions....
Btw, on Sat, it was good to finally put a face to the screenname, brah.

I think the "full" Alpine pass was already good for Kirkwood for 2011/2012 and now they are adding Squaw...

Triple Threat College Passes are valid at Alpine Meadows, Homewood and Kirkwood but not Squaw Valley. Customers who purchased their Tripl3Threat pass from Alpine Meadows will have the option to switch to the College Tahoe Super Pass (valid at Alpine and Squaw only) for $349 by paying the difference; however, the College Tahoe Super Pass is not valid at Kirkwood or Homewood. Even if you're not able to swing it, the Tripl3Threat at its early-season price of ONLY $329 is such a steal that it remains at the top of my list! And that's even after the news of Squaw's acquisition of Alpine.
Man! I can't wait to shred. I might have to bust out the freebord this wknd to take care of my jonesin'.

They used to give $50 if you were a previous season pass holder so I wanted to see if I could pull that off. And I wanted to find out what the trade show price is gonna be because I could buy it at the show in Nov. instead of now if it'll be cheaper.

From what I recall from past expos, they usually promote a special "Snow Show ONLY" price that discounts back down to the early-bird prices. For instance, I remember the SnowBomb booth offered the Tahoe Card at half off... just like it had been all summer & early fall. At the Sierra/N* booth, I also remember seeing the DoubleWhammy passes were back down to the early pre-season pricepoints.
But yeah, it would be nice to hear straight from them, esp. if there is an even deeper discount to be had. Good luck.
