thats whack man it sounds like this guy was in the main area of the resort, not hiking or anything. Whack......
thats why I trust the guys at kirkwood, nobody ever gets killed there and they have the craziest terrain. They dont mess around.

Don't get me wrong, y'all. I actually love Sierra (& N* depending on crowds). I know my way around both spots pretty well, but it just irks me that they don't seem to care about truly offering a quality on-mtn experience by limiting pass/ticket sales.
Like most everyone else, I make the most of my time on the slopes despite the crowds & conditions. Ya know, make the dollars count & get the most bang for the buck by either earning a few more turns (i.e. 99 Steps @The 'Wood) or taking the less popular lifts to access some fun stashes (i.e. ....sorry, I don't wanna give away all my secrets. ).

Nice, Eli! I'm trying to get my 3rd day in on New Years Day. 'Tis kinda nice to that we haven't had to worry about gnarly driving conditions over the last couple days. And it looks like we'll be pretty cool w/ travel for the rest of the week, too. Should be lots of folks enjoying all this early season pow & coverage. I guess I gotta use this & this for a comment like that.

I did a day trip to Kirkwood today. Conditions were great! Nicely packed power, very few icy spots, and the crowds weren't too bad.
I can't believe I made it there and back on 1 tank of gas. 395.5 miles averaging 25.7 mpg.

Sierra@Tahoe: Ring in the New Year!!!
Anyone gonna be riding/skiing Sierra manana? I'm heading up w/ family to get their learn on as well as my best bud & his bro-in-law (but they're much more mellow riders than me).
I'd love to get a few adrenaline-pumping runs in w/ a fellow i-clubber or two so I don't feel too bored fr waiting around for 'em.
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Avalanche Kills Seven in Fernie, BC
Eleven snowmobilers went out and only three returned after a major avalanche slammed into a group of men in their 20s who were riding near Fernie, BC on Sunday. The group was from Sparwood, a small town near Fernie, and were wearing transceivers, which helped rescuers find the bodies.
According to authorities the group was hit by back-to-back avalanches and so it's a miracle anyone survived. All of the snowmobilers were experienced, however after the first avalanche hit, they began digging to rescue friends and an second avalanche came down on them.
Fernie is where a popular snowboard resort called Island Lake Lodge is located. ILL was partially owned by Craig Kelly, a snowboarder who was killed in an Avalanche in 2003. In general snowmobiles are usually at much higher risk for avalanche danger, however this season it appears that everyone should be extra aware. Late snow on a sheet of ice seems to be causing this unstable layer that will not change until next years snowfall. Before venturing out anywhere please check your local avalanche conditions and if you were ever planning on buying avalanche gear, this seems to be a good time to invest.

I know this is backcountry stuff but just be aware of your conditions if you travel off piste...even at some "out of bounds" friendly resorts (or in resort hiking)...just be careful guys!
Have a safe and Happy New Year!
