It's safer...but no you don't need them. It sure makes it easier to reinstall them when you're doing it alone.
taking them off they're really not compressed much.
I still recommend using one...shoot they cost $6 to rent. Better safe than sorry in my book. Shoot I have 6 jack stands under my caddy right now and still don't feel safe.

hondas you just put them between tires...the springs kick out into the tires. Or use a thick blanket. But even for that I used a compressor..did mine for like 4 different set ups..haaa. safer.
