Road trip recommendations, anyone?? TIA!

Hey, I'm planning a summer road trip across the U.S with my folks. Do you have any suggestions for a 7-8 day road trip?

Three years ago I drove my STi back from Florida to CA via Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, and AZ. That was a pretty fun trip. This time around, I'd like to see some cool cities and sites (maybe a national park or two). I would prefer to start in CA and return to CA within a week, but I am also kicking around the idea of flying out to the East coast and driving back. I've already taken two trips to the Pacific Northwest but would not be opposed to passing through the NW again.

Any suggestions/experiences are welcome!! Thanks!!

I would cut over to Colorado go up to Montana go along the border, around the Great Lakes and down from there.

so if you fly there, how do you plan on getting back?

yeah but 7-8 days can get you across the US or it can let you explore all the roads in CA which is what i would do

I-80 to Wells, US93 to Twin Falls ID, I-84/86 to Pocatello, I-15 to Idaho Falls, ID 20/US191 to West Yellowstone.

There's really no good reason to stop between here and there, except in Lovelock, Wells, and Idaho Falls for gas, just drive straight through to Yellowstone, its only about 14 hours. I usually do it at least a couple times a year

Road trips rule. Last week, some friends and I drove from London to Stratford-upon-Avon to Leeds to Edinburgh (by way of Glasgow) then out to the country to an old (auld?) Scottish hunting lodge (Craigadam, highly recommended) and then to Manchester, back through Birmingham to London again. We started on 29/6 and turned the car back in on 9/7. Heathrow was a mess due to the scum of the Earth and their successful quest in creating fear. This week we are going to drive up to the North of Sweden from Stockholm, then back down through Malmo, Goteborg and possibly accross that nutty bridge to Denmark. Next week is Spain then back to Stockholm to look for a house.

Good times - road trips are awesome. Speed cameras suck. Bring snacks.

I just drove from PA to CA in May. I HIGHLY recommend making a detour to Mt. Rushmore. There are some fun rounds between NE and SD (saw wild buffalo). I took 80 most the way, along with a few country roads. Take as many side roads, frontage roads, detours, stops as you can. Here are some pics:

Absolutely...

I've only visited small parts of Route 66, and worked a rally that used a good portion of the California portion from outside of Victorville through Barstow, through the rest of CA and into AZ. Oatman is a great little town located on Old Route 66, and a wonderful place to visit. Make sure to have plenty of carrots in hand, however, as the wild burros (who run the town) will expect their tribute.

really cool bridge, have not seen anything like it in person, but its like 15 minutes and you just look at it. We saw some base jumpers in the afternoon, interesting stuff. The actual falls isn't all that exciting, "niagra falls of the west" my *** (thats what they call them). we proceeded to sun valley, with a detour by craters of the moon national monument, I thought it was kinda cool.

7-8 days isn't a long time, do you want to spend most of the time in the car? If so, driving cross country is probably ok, but it seems like not much fun to go with your folks and can't relax a little bit, unless they're totally into just sitting in cars.

Check this route out. SF>Reno>Boise>Twin Falls>Yellowstone>Salt Lake>Bryce/Zion Canyon (a cool site to see)>Las Vegas/Grand Canyon if you want to see it>back to SF
