What's the big deal with Real? I am a mac user, and I have WMP, REal, as well as other video players. You can download a copy of Real for free. Wahhhhh. Hey soggy, take two midol and call me in the mornin.

Real tries to hijack your system and installs all this crap you don't need or want. A ton of crap runs on boot that most don't want running 100% of the time. They used to make it painfully difficult to find the free player on their site. They PURPOSEFULLY tried to TRICK consumers into buying content they didn't want (there were news stories on this a while ago). They also have options in their software enabled by default that annoy the user to no end. These options can be disabled, but again they make them difficult for the user to find them.
Because of some of the bad press, they have made an effort to get better at some of these things, but I refuse to give them another chance. They only stopped using devious and underhanded tactics out of necessity.
I haven't installed any Real software in several years, and currently I won't on any of my systems.
Real can go screw themselves like they tried to do their own customers.
