The Tamiya DF03-ra chassis is a lot of fun and can be used in off road as well as on road. As long as the off road is mostly dirt you should be fine.
Also use their coupon code before you check out:

They don't make that particular chassis anymore but you could always buy one of the kits I linked above and order the shell separately:

a firmware upgrade to the go pro HD allows upside down mounts but with right side up videos.

there is a race in fremont, put on by hobbytown.
it's a tamiya cars only. in fact, it has to be close to 100% tamiya only.
i said screw it and pick up a tamita trf 417 chassis with a tamiya subaru impreza 2008 body.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/tcs/
info and rules. they are strict on equipment. the fremont race will only have like 5 or 6 classes...

It's amazing how far the RC cars have come! I have had them for 18 plus years and they only get better! I have a brand NEW never used 2008 Platinum Revo for sale, gas powered. The Platinum Revo has ever after market part traxxas sells for the Revo, also different frame. Have starter box and battery, just needs a controller. Brand new it retailed for $500 and the box & battery is $150 Selling as a set for $500. The truck is amazing, never wanted to use it because it's to nice! How much those RTR rally cars run for?

The mini is the most popular iirc. The 415 chassis ain't that too far behind. I think the big diff between the 416 and the 417 is that the motor was moved inwards by like 4mm towards the center and the chassis was made lipo friendly.
You will need a specific set of motor and ESC since you will be in the GT 1 class with the 415. And it is a small set of electronics to choose from...
Its free to race but the GT 1 class will also need to buy a SPEC tire set which might be around $50...
