R.I.P Maj Dick Winters, 101st Airborn, Easy Company 1918-2011

Winters was a real man, from a generation that would not have put up with the Jersey Shore generation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Winters

Looking through his wiki it seems everything he did on the show was the real deal.

Winters led an attack that destroyed a battery of German 105 mm howitzers which were firing onto the causeways that served as the principal exits from Utah Beach. The guns were defended by approximately one platoon of fifty German troops, while Winters had only thirteen men. This action south of the village of Le Grand-Chemin is often referred to as the Brécourt Manor Assault. The attack is still taught at the military academy at West Point as an example of a textbook assault on a fixed position. In addition to destroying the battery, Winters also obtained a map detailing all German defenses in the Utah Beach area.
Awesome.

Rangers lead the way!

And this pic is about as awesome as it gets, KILLIN' ****'S!!

due to the quota system which limited the distribution of the award to only one per division, and since one Medal of Honor had already been awarded, the recommendation was downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross
That's booty. I hate it where politics and the military meet.

My Grandpa was a Naval Pilot and bomber in WWII. It's a treat every time I get to talk to him about his stories. One thing for sure is our country will never have another generation like that one. RIP Winters and thank you for your service.

Count yourself lucky. My grandfather was a bomber pilot and he didn't make it back. Missed the end of the war by a month.

RIP, sucks to lose American History like this. Instead of the war on drugs the gov't should take out enough money to document every WWII vet on earth. How cool would that be?

Forgot to point out that you typically want a 3-to-1 ratio when attacking an entrenched defender, meaning the man-to-man ratio was more like 4.3 against 50, and he STILL took all the guns!

Noooooooo!
R.I.P. Winters. The way they portrayed him in Band of Brothers, he seemed like a good man.
