question on exhibition of speed
So I was whipping a few donuts in the the dorm parking lot, and the cops were a little less than agreeable on that. Anyhow...
I got a ticket for exhibition of speed, violation 23109(c) code VC
under approx. speed, 30-40 mph
veh. speed limit, 25 mph
safe speed, 15 mph
radar, -
I'm fairly certain that the cop went easy on me. I am curious about the offense though. He didn't bust me for reckless driving which is what I expected. I was doing fairly tight drifts on wet tarmac, so I'm doubtful that I was actually going faster than 20mph. He never got a radar on my speed, just his best guess.
What do you guys think? Any other college students have this experience?
I don't want to cause trouble for the officer, but at the same time I can't afford fines like this. I know I should have expected this, but I was doing it in a far corner of the parking lot, and didn't expect this much trouble.

haha damn the cop didn't give me my licence back either
I dunno, just seemed kinda weird that the officer opted for exhibition of speed. I know there are some forum members who are police officers, I was just looking for some insight into the whole "exhibition of speed" thing. Every other ticket I've gotten has been "Muthaf*ckas goin too fast!"

Here we go... Reckless driving is wanton disregard for persons or property. If you came close to another car he could've hit you with this as well, be glad he didn't. Exhibition of speed is basically showing off. Donuts are showing off. Popping a wheelie on your bike, exhibition of speed. That make sense?

yeah thats pretty much what I was looking for. Vehicle code backs that up. Just doing a search, I found tons of guys who were whining about being pulled over for exhibition of speed after doing burnouts, donuts, whatever.
I guess I was kinda confused, seems like a misnomer for a situation where I never broke 20 mph. But hey, if you swim in sh*t you're gonna eat it eventually. Thanks for the help!
I think I'll try to pay off the fine when it comes. Hopefully it won't be too much.

They can ticket you for anything anymore. Yes, I do believe they can write you up for revving your engine.
First off to the OP, the cop cited you for a misdimeanor, right? Not an infraction?

Were you on a highway? For clarification purposes, section12500(d) describes an offstreet parking facility as...
In plenty of other vc sections, it will clarify how they can cite you and what for. It's either termed as a "highway" or "offstreet parking facility." I'd say that you were on an "offstreet parking facility," not a "highway." (They've termed highway as almost any other road you drive on to get from point A to point B, including almost all backroads.) Section 23109 does not cover offstreet parking facilities, to my understanding.
Just for sake of argument.
