PS3 Advice Needed

So I have decided that between not having a Blu-Ray player for my HDTV and having been disappointed lately with the single player games for the Wii that it is time I invest in a next generation system this Christmas season.

I have all but settled on the 80GB Playstation 3 system for $399.99; but before I cut the check - I would like some advice.

I have heard that the quality of these systems leaves much to be desired and that I can expect to send it RMA at least 1 time in its life. I am OK with that but if I am going to spend $400 on a system - RMA instances should not only be kept at 1; but should only appear years after I buy the system, not months.

I have looked everywhere I can think of but I cannot find a better deal on this system (new 80GB, never opened) there are some bundles out there with extra controllers and cables and what not, however I already have HDMI cables up the wazoo and my friend is letting me have his extra DS3 controller. Anyone know of anyplace that is liquidating its PS3s?

Last question - is this system really worth $400 or would waiting for after Christmas harken better unto my wallet?

Thanks in advance!

I bought a used PS3 that was backwards compatible for PS1 and 2 games on craigslist. Also, check out Newegg.com. Last time I checked they had a really nice bundle going.

I've had the 60gb one. Bought it on launch day and have had no issues with it. I'm not a huge gamer as I use it primarily for its multimedia features and Blu-Ray. I've got to say, the HD on Blu-Ray is light years ahead of anything you'll get on cable or satellite. It's a discernible difference. Frankly, OTA broadcast has better HD than cable/sat but that's another thread. I keep all sorts of media on there and it acts like a central hub for all my mp3s, video files, and pics. It supports hulu pretty well. If it only supported Netflix streaming I'd be all set. I've already cancelled by sat subcription and it works pretty well. (ESPN360.com fills my sports needs). The fact that it streams media from my windows machines is pretty sweet too.

Last thing I bought my PS3 for. GranTourismo. Done.

$400 is worth it from a multimedia pov.I watch a lot of movies and occasionally play games with it also.I do a bit of browsing when im in the bedroom and you can stream videos also on some sites like hulu.com.

as far as as having issues I've had 0 so far.I have the 20gig from the first release which has complete backwards compatability but then again I still have my ps2 around also for older games I have the 40gig ver that gets the most abuse from playing rockband and watching blu-ray movies in the living room still going strong.damn thing is just a dust magnet so I have to clean it often

My coworker just got a 80GB from this deal for $350 shipped.

I have a 60GB PS3 and there have been no problems.

looks like I can't link it. go to slickdeals and it's on the front page.
