Another vote on the avatar count being the problem. There would actually be less DB hits and b/w utilization if there wasn't a set level, or a low one (like 100 or something. How about when you become a senior member?) becuase there'd be so many fewer posts trying to increase counts.

Why not lose the post count and the avatars? I think some people get kicks just from seeing the post count go up. Avatars are fun but they take a lot of space - especially if people are PWing 1 line responses. BARF lets everyone have an avatar, but you end up scrolling downscreen for miles to read posts. Obviously I have to have one as well just because...

Give us all avatars with a set MAX size and a MAX file size. Set the max at reasonable sizes and reasonable file sizes.
However, hosting all those avatars when people upload them and having them loaded up often is another question. That's quite a lot of bandwidth for this site considering there's a good number of people who are capable of uploading their own avatar (yea, there's still a small number of people from time to time who don't know how to upload their own avatars or how the whole avatar concept works).
I'm all for avatars for all, but my only concern is the bandwidth for the site. So it's up to good ol' Alex.
