I believe you can, talked about this in biology class. Your body can be accustomed to drinking milk (again) if you introduce it into your diet little by little. Increasing the increments of how much you drink maybe a couple ounces a day.
Just like how your body builds up immunities or resistances to certain things.

MYTH
You Can Recover From Lactose Intolerance By Changing Your Eating Habits.
See above. You may be able to cut back on your symptoms, but as far as anyone knows, nothing you can do will increase your production of lactase once it has begun to decline. You can't even slow down the rate of decrease. You can decrease the severity or frequency of your symptoms, however, you may think you're cured, but it's just not so.

I was lactose about 8 years ago, and I didn't even know what was wrong with me (incompetent little kid, haha). Although, over these past years it's gotten a lot better to the point where I'm not worried about dairy products in general.
Also, I've been told acidopholus (sp?) milk is supposed to be better for lactose intolerant

Yeah I have a bad case of lactose intolerant w/ straight milk, but cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc I'm fine with. As others have said, if you introduce it slowly, you can lessen the effects which I've done before. I just kept drinking the straight milk and I was good after a few days, and if I stop it's allllllllll bad.
Lactose intolerance comes up a lot in biology classes because it's actually pretty interesting. Lactose is a sugar because lact(ose) - think sucrose, fructose, etc. It's sugar found in milk. The lactaid milks they sell are lactose free - not quite sure how they did that. Anyways, those who are lactose intolerant lack the lactase enzyme which helps metabolize this sugar. So the sugar passes in your body and the bacteria living in your intestines metabolize it and produce gas and other waste products as a result. Of course this information is available in wikipedia, but every time I learned it in class i paid special attention because I have it and wondered why.
It's weird that when you were a 15 you had the symptoms. After wiki-ing it, it seems like a lot of people present with the symptoms but don't actually have lactose intolerant which could very well be the case.
Oh and i LOVE lactaid milk, I think because it's artificially sweetened maybe.

I grew up on this stuff.
However, I always drink actual milk, but I'm fine with soy milk as long as it's Vitasoy or Silk. Vanilla or chocolate is always tasty.

For all of you that drink soy milk they add estrogen to the liquid to help stabilize it, believed to part of the reason that the puberty age in girls is dropping. Lactose intolerance is not something you can get over, as someone already pointed out it is the lack of an enzyme to catabolyze it.
Totally laughed at the breast milk one, so funny.

When you stop taking in lactose your body stops developing lactase which is the enzyme that digests your lactose. Once they are gone you've become lactose intolerant. There are lactase suppliments that you can use, but they don't make your body produce lactase.
They say that its possible to slowly reintroduce lactose into your diet and your body should develope lactase on it's own, but your going to feel like **** and can have severe intestinal track problems.
Thats good that you can drink milk again, milk rules.
