Anyway, the Bklyn Bridge is nice, go see Coney Island before they turn it into a yuppie playground, SoHo is nice to see if your pockets have more green than lint. Ummm, LES is cool to walk around and see little shops and a bit of whats left of NYC's 'grimey' side. Queens sucks, the Bronx is cool if you want to see Yankee Stadium. Staten Island isn't worth the ferry trip.
Go see 'Ground Zero' I guess, eat in Little Italy, go to Chinatown to appreciate how clean SF's Chinatown is. Shop on Broadway from Canal to Astor Pl. Go to St. Marks if you're into music/punk history.
Theres so much, I lived there my whole life, I could go on and on. If you want specifics, PM me.

I'll vouch for the first 2 but imho Times Square is a sooper tourist trap, but if you're into the bright lights and whatnot, it's tolerable. Since it's probably still niceish weather-wise, I'd say Central park, and for the low-key days MoMa and the Guggenheim are cool. I'd recommend Chinatown too if you're trying to cop that fake LV purse for the gold digger in your life. Otherwise, stick to the lower east/and some west and you'll be all G! oh yeah, and if you're there for a week or so, I'd recommend getting an all week metro pass, it works for the bus and the subway too.
EDIT: if you're into cool toys, I'd DEFINITELY recommend Toy Tokyo on 2nd ave. also, in your situation, the best way to experience NYC are the bars after work kid! there are dimes out there like you wouldn't believe!

Whats "central park" about?? i'll probably check out china town too. public transit seems to be much more convienent if you know where all the stops are at. I have a rental and parking is a mission.

Bars are all over, it isn't like SF where theres a 'strip' and thats that. Literally almost every street has their own little set of shops, restaurants and bars. It depends on what environment you want to be in.
The subway is cake to navigate, get a map in a subway station and you'll be set. You'll look like a total tourist, but you'll be set. Forget parking, forget driving unless you 'know' where to look.
I <3 NY shirts..... Times Sq., 34th St. or Chinatown. S**t, basically anyplace that has a souvenir shop or almost any little hole in the wall street vendor should have them. Hats, buttons and coffee mugs too.

sounds like you're staying in queens. i'd say forget the car. just take public transit. the trains are extremely easy to navigate. most garages in manhattan run you $30+ a day, and street parking is a ***** because their regulations are very strict.
if you venture out to jersey, be sure to hit liberty state park. from there you can get great views of the nyc skyline. you can also catch a ferry to the statue of liberty.
another up and coming area of jersey, right across the river is hoboken and jersey city. it's just a short ride on the PATH trains.
some great bar areas in manhattan - meatpacking district, or the lower east side "alphabet city". great dives in that area.

I started out at times square saturday and bought a bus tour ride which seemed to be a pretty good deal. the deal was a all-day hop on/off bus tour of the designated dowtown route a tour of about "22" attractions around 2 hours long. I had lunch at "Dallas BBQ" which was really good btw.
On the tour bus I got to see:
broadway theater
macys/madison square garden
empire state building
Flatiron building
union square shop
greenwhich village
SOHO - SUPER crowded area with alot of designer brand names
China town/little italy - Also very crowded and almost bought some knock off ipods for $40 hah
City Hall
world trade center site - couldnt see much of the site all of the fencing was curtained off but from what i could see from the overpass was a big hole in the ground where they've started construction of the new "freedom tower"
Whitehall St/battery park
South Seaport
Lower east side
East village
UN
Waldorf
Rockefeller Ctr
Central Park/hotel
brooklyn bridge
Statue of Liberty
found some "I<3 NYC" shirts in china town two for 8 bucks not bad.
NYC is awesome!!
