OT: Wireless IP Camera setup

This is totally off-topic, but I know there are some people here who know more than I do about this stuff. I got a couple wired/wireless network (IP) cameras that can either connect to my router with a cat-5 cable or wirelessly. I am able to view the picture & control the pan/tilt using the included software, but it's also supposed to be able to be controlled & viewed via the browser interface, as well. The browser interface brings up the camera's internal view/control screen, as well as the options menus, but there's absolutely no response from the camera when trying to move it, change settings, and there's no picture, either. I know it's connected properly, because I can see and control it with the application software from a network-connected computer, but the other, more important half of the equation (remote access) is totally not happening. Also, the instructions and all the software UI is in Engrish, and there's no contact email or website with any real help besides http://app.ipcam.hk

Any help would be appreciated. If the thing just doesn't work, I'll send it back, but if it's something I'm doing wrong, I'd like to make it work. I've installed the activex plugin, so I can't think of anything else that would be causing the problem.

I'm guessing you need to correctly forward the port it is using to broadcast the signal. You will need to find out what the port is, then follow this guide.

generally port forwarding is only necessary if the communicating devices are on different sides of the router, since his cameras are behind the same router as pc, port forwarding should not be necessary

you should first verify your cameras have been assigned an ip addrs, go to your routers interface and check the dhcp table to see what devices have been assigned an ip. if the cameras are there, make sure your pc can ping them; if not, try and find any info about why they are not connected to the network, I'd guess a step was missed when making the network connection. start simple with a wired connection, after that works go to wireless and remember that if you have secure connections enabled you'll need to input a network key when setting up the cameras wireless connection.

Thanks for the input so far. I have checked out porforward.com, and I understand the issue should not exist when my PC & camera are both on the same router. I don't see my camera on the DHCP table, but I'm still able to access its interface by inputting the static IP address the camera comes with, which is 192.168.1.126. I did, coincidentally, set up my Linksys WRT54G router to forward the IP address on the default port 80, so technically, it should be accessible outside my router on the internet. I am not so worried about that, yet, as I still can't see the camera images & control anything (pan/tilt, etc) from the interface by using either IE or Firefox. The instructions say it is compatible with Firefox, calling it an "F" series camera. I'll have to read through the instructions for my router again, maybe, to see if I missed something about connecting a device that already has an internal IP address... Maybe something about aliasing the device? Either way, I can't change any of the device's internal settings yet until I can access it via the browser interface, so right now all the options in the settings menu are grayed out.

Oh, by the way, this is the camera I got.

if you have access through the default static ip then this is probably not a networking issue. since the buttons are greyed out, it sounds like the camera is configured to disable those features. If it were a network issue, you'd expect the buttons to appear normally and just not do anything.

sorry, this sounds like a device specific issue, not sure how else i'd be able to help.

you said you had port forwarding open on your router to this cameras static ip (192.168.1.126), if you want, you can pm me your ip (isp assigned) and I can try to take a look. if there's a uname and pass for the camera you'd have to send those too, then change later.

You have to program the static IP routing in the router & om each cameras virtual server (Ex 192.168.1.131:81, 192.168.1.132:82, Etc)

it does not look like a networking issue, it looks like a user permissions issue, the buttons will be greyed out unless he logs in to the camera with an admin acct. he needs to find out the default admin acct credentials and configure the camera.
