Here's some advise that could apply to either vapor or Eggman's-STI's wife.

Spend your budget mostly on the instrument for now. Unless you really need to be able to gig, you can get by with a practice amp (or some software moddling), but if you buy a cheap instrument, the playability and intonation problems will cause you constant frustration.

Second, you can't pick an instrument by "make and model". You might decide, for instance, that you want a Fender P : you still ought to go to a music store and pick up and fiddle with every P-bass they have, to find the one that speaks to your hands.

Keep a tight bottom,
M

Very well said, I would consider comfort first, sound second, and style last. I personally don't care who makes it.

The Starving Musician on Stevens Creek and Lawarance Expressway is a goldmine IF you know what you are looking for in a used instrument. at least go there and try some stuff out.
BTW the Peavey Foundation is an awesome bass for the $$ - for less than $400 its a good instrument

Punk. I wish I had money for a third bass because that would be the one I'd buy. Plus Flea uses it!

i play upright bass. i have a voilemaster with a rosewood neck... and custom pickups. one on the back of the neck to pick up the slap and one on the bridge to pick up the tone. i paid about 2,000 bucks for my bass and had my custom pickups made and installed by my friend boz boorer. (plays guitar for morrissey) i run gut strings on there cause my fingers are very small and the steel strings tore holes in them. havent sprung the money for an amp though... i've just always used the house amp for shows. so my answer is...

buy upright!!

I don't think flea still uses a musicman. I think he plays mainly on an old jazz and his own specially designed bass from modulus, which i have

oh yeah.. uh... if you want to really know exactly what you should get... and what's right for you, go to this website... find the contact number and talk to the guy who sells the basses there. he's AWESOME. (forgot his name i got my bass a couple years ago) that's where i got my bass. www.freedomguitar.com
its based in san diego but they can freight it to you... or you can go pick it up yourself.

It seems like there are some nice instruments here for a car-forum.

Any of y'all in bands?

Since hers is a Stand-Up I think it's more of a shovel than an ax. I'm no longer in a band. All the guys I played with through highschool have since moved away, and soem other guys I like to jam with live in Santa Clara which is too far from Antioch to do very often.
