opinions on going from 05 sti to 04-05 s4

Howdy folks,

I am interested in hearing opinions from folks who have driven the 04-05 audi s4 and an 04-07 sti about differences between the cars.

It seems that my life path is taking me away from wanting/needing a car that is good at the autocross and track as well as a dd and more of a road car with occasional track day (1x/yr) with more refinement/luxury.

Thanks for your $0.02

I was in the same boat last year... I was considering the 04-07 S4, but after reading about the costs associated with turbo replacement and general reliability, I shied away. From what I recall the stock turbos are hard to reach and tend to go bad at higher miles (60k+).

I ended up settling for a 09 STi, but sometimes still wish that I had gone with the S4 Avant.

2004-2008 s4 uses the non turbo, non supercharged, 4.2 litre v8. The previous years s4 uses the 2.7 twin turbo setup.

get a used e46 m3 instead. Would be more fun to drive and is probably faster stock for stock in the straights or the twisties.

I"m the man to answer this. We have had an 05 and a half s4 since it was new, now close to 50k, I put 45k on my old sti, luckily my baller 06 only has 8,500 on it WOO. ANYWAYS

-For comfort and cruising any day, s4.
-For INCREDIBLEEEEEEEEEE GAS COSTS, s4 also wins

-Sti rapes on raw performance and speed but losses big time on comfort.

The sti is for sure a better performance machine little smaller, but the s4 isn't too terribly far off, and has a lot more comfort and is very pleasant to drive in many conditions.Tough choice tho

S4 has that awesome v8, even tho the sti is far torquerier the s4 has a high redline.........it has an amazing interior design and function both........it has better turn in than the sti stock, even tho its more of a pig being 3700+~lbs.

I love my sti, but for cruising the s4 is definitely nicer, and they do feel slightly similar stock,

go drive them!

hoping to drive one this weekend.

I know that I am going to have to pay to play in terms of mpg!

I would love an e46 m3 but they don't come in a 4 door and that is a requirement for me.

honestly the m3's kinda suck when they are older, and are insane to fix. Plus the s4 awd is nice despite the weight. Definitely a nicer car imo, never driven a new e46 tho always had 35k+

--my feeling is if you were going to get the m3, you should be getting the sti.

if you wear your hands free in your ear all day, and like collared shirts, get the S4.

If you like performance, the ability to stomp most any driver when needed, you like a car that actually handles well, is MUCH MUCH cheaper to maintain, then get the STi.

I have had both (2 s4'S, 6 Subaru's) and each time I end up wanting to kill myself for getting an audi/vw.....

just my thoughts...

josh

PS i think the V8 versions look like ***. and remember the the audi V8 hangs all the way over the front of the car. talk about understeer.....

If you plan on modding, get the STi.

if you just want speed & comfort but dont plan to mod, get the S4.

If you have no $$ for maintenance/upkeep, then get the STi.

If you have $$ and time for maintenance/upkeep, get the S4.

If you don't mind being profiled as a street racer by LEO's, get the STi.

If you're single, get the S4. Married or with a GF that doesn't really care about cars, get the STi.

If you plan on tracking, I'd say an STi for when things break or (gods forbid) you wreck it.

Haven't owned an S4; driven/rode in plenty of Audi's with freinds/family, and am on my second Subie as owner and third in the family, one of which was an STi.

If the STi had the Audi interior, that'd be the best of both worlds!

yea the audi can understeer but the turn in is definitely better than an sti's stock, they pull a pretty great number on the skidpad for a heavier awd sedan. Definitely fun to drive, and understeers like the sti, e.g people who can't drive em have a problem with it.
