14k sounds about right for a clean FD, meaning great body and interior. Since you said you know nothing about the car i wouldn't buy it. They require alot of knowledge and you MUST do reliability mods before you get into alot of performance. Go on rx7club.com and read alot then get it or decide if its the right car for you. Just dont be like many people who buy it and mess it up because they dont know what they're doing. But other than all that, its seriously a great car and looks amazing.

Seriously I don't really beat on my cars...I just like to flex. Kinda tough to justify a 2 seater since I just had a kid

I have a couple of friends who open road race their 3rd generation RX7's. If you want their contact information let me know and you can ask them loads of questions.

I also have been thinking about an FD. I have come to the decision that I will keep the wrx as my daily driver because it is way more dependable yet still fun to drive. Someday when I can afford a project car, a $5-10K FD + another $10K in mods and I will be happy.... untill then the wrx is fun enough. (just not as sexy of a car) I would get on the rx7 boards and find a couple good local rotary shops and get buddy buddy with them. They will be able to give you the best advice.

If you are ok with needing to drop money on it from time to time they are a great car. I owned one for four years. It was my only car though and a couple of times I was without a car for a week while parts were ordered in for it. I may end up buying another 'cos I miss it a lot.
If you can get any info or history on the vehicle's maintennance, that would be worth checking into. Engine replacement, turbos and clutch are all lotsa $$s.

I like those '93 RX-7's too!
If possible, try to find out if it's ever been over-heated. I've heard the cooling system is the weak point on those cars. Remember you're talking about an 11 year old car.

I would give one piece of advice on buying an FD- if the owner says it's never had any problems, RUN, don't walk, from the sale. Either they are hiding some problem or it is getting ready to fall apart all at once. In fact, I would be highly surprised if the car isn't on its second or even third motor. Expect to be told that some sort of major maintenance has been performed, or that he has done all the right things to avoid it- i.e. cooling system mods, keeping the gas tank full, etc.

yea like ban suvs said, check to see if the guy has done some reliability mods such as new ast, radiator, and possibly even engine management. Also when you test drive the car make sure the idle isn't high. If its around 2k when its fully warmed that means the seller could be hiding a blown engine, the car wont idle correctly any lower than that when its blown. Also if its on the stock twins bring a boost gauge and make sure the boost pattern is 10-8-10. If all that checks out then go for it and buy it.

I had a friend buy a FD that "never had problems". Man, that was a year and a half nightmare that was bittersweet through and through.
He eventually got the car running great (the snakebundle vacuum hose replacement itself was a month long evening project!) but was so sick of it at that point that he sold it.
Caveat emptor with a FD.
They are SEXY lookin' beasts though! (That's probably the only reason he kept the car so long).

I think buying an FD is like having a lingerie model for a girlfriend. While it looks GREAT from the outside (and by all accounts ROCKS when everything is going right) the drama and ensuing chaos surrounding the fact that she's such a sexy beast makes it less than optimal.
