Opinions on 3000GT VR4?

I'm picking a 1991 up for $1k that's been garaged for over 2 years now. Motor most likely needs a rebuild. Opinions on keeping this car stock(it's in good condition as it sits) or should I modify/track it? They don't have too much value at the moment but I'm curious if that would ever go up, considering a stock vehicle will be worth more. Part of me says **** it, it's only a grand...what would you do?

I'd just get it drivable and have fun with it. My buddy had one in college (roughly '97-'98ish) and it was a blast to drive as there weren't many cars like it at the time. IIRC, it's pretty damn heavy though so it likely wouldn't make a very good track car.

Yeah they are around 3700-3800 pounds. That's what I'm leaning towards but the urge to strip it apart tempts me thanks for your input!

Edmunds Review FWIW

3,781 lbs. Pretty beefy. Not sure how much you'd lose by stripping/gutting it, but I don't think it'd be worth it personally. What's the exterior look like? Color?

I'm guessing a couple hundred pounds but then you're still heavier than an STi

It's black, extremely well kept by a 60 year old(dads best friend). Stock all around. The transmission was rebuilt right before it went into storage.

I figured. A lot of cool stuff in a 91 comes at a cost. What kind of issues?

I heard the 4 wheel steering system fail often, engine bay is an absolute clusterjoke so it's tough to work on, heavy as hell, obviously the awd system is going to be worthless, all the fun that comes with owning a 21 year old car, etc.

$1k? Hell yeah.

Used to own one a long time ago. Loved it, heavy as hell, but AWD Twinturbo? Gotta love it! I personally would rebuild it mechanically completely as they are very hard to work on.

That's why I'm thinking of stripping out all unnecessary stuff from the engine. Sounds like it would be too expensive to maintain for value. Looking like I'll make it a fun canyon carver

Sounds like youve already made up your mind. Though for 1K I would just buy it, clean it up, and flip it.
