It is not uncommon. It is amazing how many people have a completely different idea of what management really thinks of their performance.
In they come, to step up to the plate and demand a raise and the management sees a great opportunity to say "no thank you" AND "clear your desk".
The time to ask for a raise is when you have a good prospect, but would prefer to work where you are (nothing to loose). OR, at the top of your game... say after finding out you were the top dog of your sales 'team' for the 2nd quarter. making it 2 for 2 so far this year!
Sorry to hear... but nothing stirs one to change (and usually for the good) as getting canned or 'laid off'. The human tends to move only when uncomfortable ~
