Occassional bouts of surging when applying throttle
(I've posted this before in various forums on the old I-Club ... with no responses... why not try again )
Every so often when I hit the gas, not a full mashing but not being dainty about it either, I will get this fluctuating surge almost like boost is coming on and off real fast or as thought I was going on and off the throttle real fast. Now I havent seen boost going up and down (although I'd love to datalog sometime). So I really can't pinpoint what's going on.
I can put a steady or steadily increading pressure on the throttle and get this behavior.
I've gotten this on and off for the past 8 or so months, through varying mods. Any ideas?
Could it be timing being pulled? I was wondering, but its not like a lasting effect.

when is the last time you changed your air cleaner element? i had the same problem, swapped out the air cleaner for a new one (factory replacement, next one will be STi) and the problem went away... how about that...

My car used to do the surging you are describing. The cause was that I was using a Blitz SBC-id EBC and had the silicone hoses that are supplied with the kit connected directly to the stock turbo wastegate/turbo inlet. Once I used the supplied plastic vaccuum connectors that stepped down the inner diameter size of the silicone hoses back to the stock size, the surging went away.

i get the surging also. I've heard all the possible fixes that you guys have listed. One that hasn't been listed is the stock ecu. People say when accelerating sometimes it will detect knock and pull timing thus causing the car to surge. Once you get a new ecu people have reported it as being smooth and notice no surge just smooth power.

OT: I personally second the STi airfilter...good mod! That plus removed intake snorkle and catback = better throttle response.
I want to know how you can get the "new" ecu as well!
I think what you're feeling may be a faulty factory boost solenoid, but I dunno...
I feel that "flutter" from time to time, usually with very low (but instant) throttle application though.
BTW, what is "boost creep"?

I'm getting the same surging. Been trying to figure out why, and all I have in right now is the SBC Spec R EBC.
Kurlee:
Sounds like I've got the problem you were experiencing. What's the restrictor size? Since I didn't do the install, the EBC is mounted a bit far for my taste (rear firewall in the engine bay), and I don't have any of the old hoses or the restrictor. What's the size? Any chance of finding it at an auto supply shop? Where did you install the restrictor?

People often complain that they get "creep" , "bogging", or "hesitation" and blame the ECU. Why is it that these issues are not there when you the car is stock? It's not because of the ECU. I am sure there may be instances when it may be the ecu. however, it's more likely that the aftermarket components introduced to the system is the cause of the malfunctions.
The resistrictor could help the "bogging"/ "surging" sensation. Check out the wastgate lines on your turbo. Follow the line back to the boost controller/solenoid. You will see a little plastic fitting hiden in the line. take that plastic piece out and replace it with a larger diameter fitting.
