Oh ya you know the only economic sense it doesn't make is that just happens to be when people who you know, work for a living happen to be on the road so they can make money and pay taxes that the gov't mismanages because they have no control over the hours set by the company they work for. Yup no economic benefit to having people work, not at all.

If we legalized pot and taxed the **** out of it like cigarettes that would be fixed and we wouldn't be broke.

< coming from a paramedic that knows alcohol is 10x more dangerous than pot. Why we refuse to make millions boggles my mind. They cut public safety and schools before they run drug dealers out of business? Sigh...

It would be easy to enforce... all they have to do is require a yearly vehicle inspection (like a smog) when you renew your registration. Have the tech record mileage and make the assessment.

While I'm not a big fan of this plan; recognize the state is broke. Not in the hole, but dead goddamn broke. CA is the largest and richest state in the US and has the worst credit rating.
The money is gonna have to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is taxes. We are all going to take a hit

What happens when some of those miles are driven outside of california? It also sounds like they would only be enforcing the tax for driving inside of nine counties around the bay area or at least that's what I got from the article. I understand the state is broke and money needs to come from somewhere but how about cutting back on wasteful spending first? We pay more taxes here than anywhere else in the country. Our income tax is higher, our sales tax is higher, taxes on gas are higher, etc..... The money going in is not the problem anymore, the people making decision on what to do with our money are the problem. But maybe we can spend more millions on a panel to look into the possibility of a high speed train.

i just read about it and if it dad pass it would not start the tax till 10 or more years from now. and if they do it the sate will get rid of gas tax and thats more then this new driving tax.

That's great in theory. But people would not vote to have it taxed that much. Just like the cigarette tax that was just proposed didn't pass. I know in other states, cigarettes cost way more than they do here.

And I do think California would be better as 2 states.
