You can camp in the Kyburz and Ice House back logging roads. Preferably not during hunting season. You can get a fire permit near the ranger station by Apple Hill. You can even shoot back in the booneys. Just be careful and know there's a fire risk during the summer.
The exit is sorta hidden just past sugarloaf and St. Paulie Inn off 50. Or Ice house should have signs just as you start to hug the American River. Once you go up there and start camping you’ll never want to go anywhere else because of the seclusion. Might want to take a high caliber pistol for bears and cougars.
Also, there's actual camp grounds within throwing distance off hwy50. May not be able to get too loud there but you can still have a good time. One is chinaflat and the other (which is more secluded) is called silverfork. Both are directly on forks of the American River with fishing access. The water will probably be fast around this time though. Directions should be easy enough if you stop in at a gas station or ranger station. I know them off memory only...
I used to go out to lake Comanche too. You can usually get loud out there too.
Oh yeah! How could I forget Dillons Beach out at Bodega Bay. You can camp right on the water and even have crab cooks during the season. The crabbing dock is nearby and there's also tons of dunes for bikes and ATVs. Beer and biligerent behavior are mandatory.

if you have a 4wd SUV and some tires that dont mind getting banged up some, there is this camping space on the west side of lake tahoe, around tahoma.
great spot.
last time we were there, only one other car and they left like 2-3 hours after we got there:

see that bear lake? it was great.
then going out, i took exit that had some good spots to go wheeling...
otherwise, going out the way you came back in is easy....

I have two favorite places - but no guns in either.
1. Lake Almanor or Butt Lake, they are next to each other, Butt lake is much more private.
2. Agate Beach, awsome to go there in the Summer, it's hot as hell out but at the campsite it is around 60 degrees and on the beach is it around 80. You can be as loud as you want on the beach, esp at night.

I like lake Camanche. Great boating, great fishing, nice campgrounds and you can go hardcore camping if you really feel like it, but I prefer a nice level place to pop the tent with showers within walking distance Lake Pardee is ok, but a little small for my liking. There's a bunch of little lakes up that way, New Hogan, New Melones(right by angels camp), and a ton of little ones.
