New Traffic Laws in California

These were a couple laws that I though might be of interest to those of us in California. They will all be instituted on January 1st, 2005.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Engaging in a Speed Contest

SB1541
Requires the DMV to immediately suspend the driver's license of a person convicted of engaging in a speed contest upon receipt of an abstract of a court and may not reinstate the privilege until the person give financial reponsibility after the suspension period has expired.
Provides that person convicted of this section shall, in addition to other penalties, be required to perform 40 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. Also gives the court the option of not imposing the mandatory six month driving suspension.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exceeding Speed Limit

Increases the fines for second and third offences for speeding in excess of 100 mph to $750 & $1000 respectively.

Be safe out there.

So basically if you don't street race and you keep it under 100mph, you should be ok?

Sounds good.

Basically, yes. I thought the 40 hours community service was a real hit though.

I think it's good. People need to realize how dangerous it is to street race, and hopefully if someone gets this penalty it will be before they kill someone, and will prevent them from doing it again.

I prefer the city that on the second conviction of street racing they crush your car. No questions asked the just smash it into a nice little block. That is also in Cali.

Absolutely. I'm out in Tracy and some of the areas out here used to be a real draw for drag racers from the Bay Area. After a few large busts between the local cops and the Highway Patrol, it seems to have squelled most of the big events, thankfully. At this point there have been no major crashes and hopefully laws like these will make idiots think twice.

I think it would be fun to contest a "speed contest" ticket in an AWD car, if you only raced to the speed limit.

You did not burn out,
You did not exceed the speed limit
You did not endanger anyone (by not exceding the speed limit)

I dont think they could prove you WERE racing, even if you went full throttle against someone. You could have just been "accelerating very quickly" which is not against the law (as long as you are doing it safely)

No matter what anyone does or any laws that are put down, there will ALWAYS be people breaking the law.

So they're just going to be making more money off of people.

They need to have a local track keep most street racers of the streets. I live in San Jose. The nearest track would be 1:30 mins away.
