Car Info: 03' Subaru Impreza WRX - R.I.P.
RA Gearset + Accessories kit ~ $1400
Additional parts and labor for transmission rebuild + install into car ~ $1500
New clutch and or/flywheel (if necessary) $400 - $2000

Hey Jeff, sorry to hear about your recent tranny problem.. since I went through two tranny replacements already, I already considered an RA gearset rebuild, and for the price I never thought it was worth it. You are better off finding a used WRX 5 spd, or low mileage JDM 5-spd and rear diff swap to match the final drive ratio. If I was going to spend around $3k, it would be a 6mt swap all the way!

Although this option does sound viable here's what I have so far this morning:

IA Performance:
Gearset: $1450 Shipped (I'm using this price as a reference for both IA and GST)

Rebuilt tranny: $2500-$800(core)=$1700
+(S+H x2)

GST:
Rebuild charge: $475
Gearset: +$1450
Brngs/Sync +~$580
CA Tax +~$166

Now these figures are a guesstimate, bu I'd bet they are pretty close. The 6spd option tastes good but I bet I get really bad indigestion from it. I have to lean torwards the RA. I can get the Cryo & Polish from IA for another $200 bucks. Mike, can you get a whole sale from them? I know I said I wanted to keep the money local, but if there is going to be this much of a difference in price.... Well you know.

Jon I hear you, loud and clear. I just don't think replacing an inferior part with another inferior part is a good idea. You know what I mean? Seeing as how there is still more power available to me a stock 5MT is out of the question.

Well keep in mind Jon is a pretty competent mechanic (did his shortblock swap himself) so if you can swap trannies (which is much easier for a home mechanic to do than rebuilding) you can make a better deal since you can get it used for ~500-800 bucks, so you can blow like 4 trannies and it'll still be worth it.

But yeah also

1. don't forget about the new clutch/fw
2. if you go with RA gears don't forget dual 1st gear synchros (I'm sure you already remembered though)

The plan is to get a complete tranny with core exchange from IA. New clutch disc and pressure plate is a given seeing as how I smoked the other one.
As for competency on my part goes... I am more than competent to do the swap. There comes a time when you need to decide who's shoulder should carry the weight. If anything goes wrong I don't want to be the one liable. Put that burden on somone else.
Piece of mind and turn around time are worth more than a feather in the hat and a nickle in your pocket. Doing the same thing more than once is a really crappy deal. Trust me 4 motors in 4 months, you'd feel the same way. While it's at the shop I going to have then install the new intake manifold, fuelrails and turbo inlet. Might as well, It's there. I just hope that I can get this sucker rolling within the next week or so. Anyone wanna give me a loan?
