Need some tips for getting a TV this Black Friday
#19
What do you mean AFTER Black Friday? Given that everybody sells a similar set of brands, are you saying I should look in the papers for the Fry's ads on monday instead?
Hey Gagan, here's the issue I have - I'm looking to use this TV for a PC monitor replacement. I plan to do gaming with it and it looks like I'm going to need a 120hz refresh rate, and I am told those are going to be uber expensive regardless of Black Friday or after.
I just went to Best Buy and I can definately tell the difference between a $600 and $1400 37" TV, the colors are much more pronounced. The blues visibly bluer, etc.
Similarly I can really tell the difference between the 120hz and 60hz - the 120hz looks a lot more like a PC monitor, the motion is much smoother.

LCDs make for better monitors: no worries about burn in, less power consumption compared to plasma and have better contrast than most monitors anyways. power consumption is around 50-90 watts/hr.
Plasmas are better if you are after refresh rates. Panasonic's are 480hz! You can't really beat that unless you use a old school CRT . They have awesome contrast, but if you leave the TV on while your computer is on after 4-6 hours you will start to burn the desktop in. Huge power consumption, somewhere around 500 watts/hr on average.
120hz is overrated. All it's going to do is make your head hurt. Computers that can generate 120hz clock cycle for a given resolution would work out fine, but that's not the case really. You'll be doing 60hz, perhaps 75hz, but not many TVs will accept 75hz.
60hz is pretty fast really, you shouldn't have any issues with that or a 60hz TV. My cousins and my brother play Call of Duty on the PS3 for hours on end and it's just fine.
The plasma's do convert to 480hz easily and smoothly, but the visual difference is still minimal. Most TVs that do 120hx conversions do them wrong, and you get a very weird/smooth/surreal effect. Just looks fake...

650 and 750 series are pretty good TVs I've found. First ones since late last year to address the macroblocking issues found on 550, 450 and older TVs all the way back to 2004.
I still prefer the Sonys. I got a 42" vizio in Feb for $950... its in my bedroom on the wall. I use it for TV and as an extended desktop from my PC for videos and stuff.

I'll look around, but again, best deals will be after friday
Sony would be the way to go Jeremy, I'll keep an eye out and let you know about what gets you around that size. Whats your budget?

I never said anything about brand............I said they don't make a 60" LCD what does that have to do with brand? And when it comes to 60" nothing is really cheap lol. Plus when you have a tv that big it really shows the flaws on the picture so you do have to spend the money on something good. I have a 60" pioneer elite and the picture is by far the best picture I have ever seen on any tv. Only problem is that it cost a lot of money
