Need some tips for getting a TV this Black Friday
So I know a bunch of you guys are A/V experts, worked at Best Buy, Fry's etc. and know a lot about plasma and LCD TVs. I'm going to hunt around for something that will do 1920x1200 so I can use it as a monitor
I notice all of these black friday ads for TVs don't list a model #, just a size and price. This is kind of worrisome to me: do stores usually discount only the low end stuff?
http://downloads.bfads.net/BFAds-CircuitCity-2008.pdf
http://bfads.net/Samsung-50-Plasma-HDTV-at-WalMart
http://bfads.net/Polaroid-42-LCD-1080p-HDTV-at-WalMart
What in general is the stuff to look for when getting a tv? Contrast, refresh, etc? I see these listed in the info cards and reviews, do these make a percievable difference in quality?

careful with models from walmart.
like my vizio, WM got vizio to make a special model from them. so places like CC or BB couldnt pricematch WM.
CC's model was like vx-32X while WM's was like vx-32W.
and of course, it was missing 1 or 2 inputs.
WM was selling it for $599. CC was like $650. but i got mine from CC while it was on sale for $599...
so plan ahead.

If you are looking to get an LCD, and want the best, get a sony... otherwise, get a vizio from costco, it's 80% of the sony at 50% of the price. Usually they have not as good blacks, but are otherwise great. I'm STILL finding toshiba and samsungs to have macroblocking issues and other weird artifacts. The Sharps still have banding issues.
If you are looking for a Plasma take advantage of the Panasonic's uber cheap prices right now. Everywhere you look you can find a 42" 1080p plasma for less than $1000, sometimes less than $850! If you want the best plasmas, you'll want to find a Kuro series from Pioneer, but these are usually REALLY expensive.
Look at Costco and Frys and also keep your eye out for the big box stores. But Costco and Fry's will have some KILLER deals... AFTER... Black friday.

In this day and age... NO reason to buy a 720p TV anymore. Get a 1080p TV...

What do you mean AFTER Black Friday? Given that everybody sells a similar set of brands, are you saying I should look in the papers for the Fry's ads on monday instead?
Hey Gagan, here's the issue I have - I'm looking to use this TV for a PC monitor replacement. I plan to do gaming with it and it looks like I'm going to need a 120hz refresh rate, and I am told those are going to be uber expensive regardless of Black Friday or after.
I just went to Best Buy and I can definately tell the difference between a $600 and $1400 37" TV, the colors are much more pronounced. The blues visibly bluer, etc.
Similarly I can really tell the difference between the 120hz and 60hz - the 120hz looks a lot more like a PC monitor, the motion is much smoother.

Let me back up for a bit.... from my reading it looks like if I get a plasma I don't have to worry about the refresh rate issue?

But one thing you DO have to worry about plasma is heat/electric usage.
They run a lot hotter than comparable RP or LCD models and will take a **** all over your PG&E bill.
