Need some computer tech help for Windows 7

My mom has a HP laptop and the power icon in the task bar isn't showing. When I try to go and activate it, it's grayed out. I've tried restarting the computer, using Microsoft Fix It, deleted some registry files, downloaded a registry fix and yet it's still grayed out.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Yeah it's not in there either. It had a crazy virus recently that we had removed with Norton 360. I have a feeling it missed some of it.

maybe you still have some lingering malware/virus.

best way is to remove the HD and using a sata to usb or ide to usb device, hook the drive into a KNOWN SAFE/CLEAN machine and scan it from there.

it's because once you boot that machine up, it can hide or disguise itself from any nortons or anti malware s/w...

Why dont you just do a system restore to a month back. See if that works.

That is, quite possibly, the most idiotic piece of advice I have ever read. Ever.

She doesn't have any old restore points so it would have to be a factory restore, which we might have to do if we can't figure it out.

Yea thats IF the person has made frequent restore points in time lol.

Okay so you say that this is your moms computer. Does she have a lot of personalized options and preference saved up in programs and applications? Or is all the information easily backed up onto another drive (i.e. most of the files are media files, photos, documents, etc) stand alone saved files. If she does not have a lot of applications on there with saved personal settings like photo album programs, photo editing, etc etc and much has not been changed; then I would suggest to just do a fresh wipe and just reformat the system and throw back on all your data. There still might be traces of the virus attack that would cause annoyances.

I guess she talked to some tech guy and he told her that it's normal for that to happen on Vista and W7.

Look around the net for instructions using CMD you can probably create the file again through there.
