Valentine 1's are not cheap, expect to pay like $390 for a new one (and you really should just buy a new one).

Make sure when you mount it that it can see out of its front and rear sensors, for me it works best mounted just below the right half of my rearview mirror, if its mounted too high it won't have a good enough "view" out of its sensors.

Now that I have a V1, I can't live without it...

Good question, but it comes down to this.
If the cop sees you have a radar detector legal or not he will write you a ticket. You went out to buy a radar detector to try and warn you when to slow down. This means you are guilty by association. I know it isn't a nice thing to say, but honestly they figure you are trying to beat the system so they will nail you if they can. Keeping it in an out of the way place, means you might actually get off if you get pulled ove. Minus the fix it ticket for no front license or the Nur Spec muffler with out a silencer.. LOL

Detector will not help you against CHP RADAR.

CHP's vehicle mounted radar is pure evil, and as such, a detector won't help you avoid a ticket.

Don't belive me?
PM RC51Driver and ask what he thinks.

my bro saw a news feature on ABC or another bay area station about CA buying 70+ LIDAR units. if a quarter of those units are even allocated to the bay area, our V1's won't be as effective -- mine picks up laser, but with the instantaneous "hit," we're screwed.

that's just my caveat about radar detectors nowadays...LIDAR will make them less effective by way of very little to no warning time.

in your scenario, it would've helped. i am keeping mine for long road trips, especially the 5. my unit saved my **** 3 times on one trip down to LA! if anything, the unit has kept my speed in check with the occasional false warning since it makes you conscious of your speed.

thing is, laser jammers aren't illegal yet. although imo it's easier/safer just to drive the speed limit.

Get the Valentine One.

Others will surely try to get you to buy the (cheaper) Escort detector (because they did), but nothing is as good as the V1 (even if their "detection" rates are similar). I've had other detectors and by far, the V1 is the best--if only for the directional arrows. For example, how are you supposed to know if the "coast is clear", after you've heard your detector go off? Other detectors will surely do their job, but it's your own psychology that'll screw you.... "nahh... it must have been a fluke" or, "nahh.... he must have been tagging traffic going the other way". You speed back up and whoops--BLAMMO! The arrows on a V1 will tell you when you've got past the bogey and when you haven't.

Keep in mind radar detectors are hardly a license to speed. Especially since many cops are using POP radar and laser, sometimes the odds are stacked impossibly against you.

If you REALLY want to be pedantic about, get a Valentine 1 and a *laser* jammer (which actually work, but cost on the order of $500). With those two items in your toolbag and a keen eye, I'd say your odds are about as good as you'll ever get.
