My car has a case of the clunk
Very recently I started getting a clunking from the right rear of my car. It's definately suspension related but I haven't had a chance to get it on a lift and see whats up. I'm planing on heading to LIC in a week or so for an oil change and I'll have them look at it then, but I'm curious if anyone wants to hazard a guess at whats up. It sounds almost like a door rattle, and happens while moving slow or fast, and on all types of terrain. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt

any modifications to your suspension?
Could be a lot of thing. I know for wagon guys and many others that the bolts on the strut tops can back out some and you get a clunk there. Mine's doing it now. Tighten it or throw a washer in there I've heard that works.
could also be your endlinks or many other things.

Time for coilovers... maybe in a few months. I finally got a new position at my work which means more $$$ to feed my car. Anyways I'll be calling about scehduling an oilchange shortly.

if its rear strut clunk, first thing you can try is spraying the shaft of the strut where it enters the body with some white lithium grease (comes in a spray can from home depot)
If your car really is bone stock, then take it to a dealer, a lot of guys get them replaced under warranty

if its not the strut clunk check this plate that is directly under the right rear passenger seat under the car. it holds this arm that holds the diff up. when i took my car to a shop before to get some work done, they iddnt lift my car up from the right points, and ended up bending this plate, which caused a horrible clunking sound that sounded like rattling, no matter what speed or type of road. my fix was to just hammer that plate flat again

Take it in for warranty. It's a documented problem. I have it too. Stupid STi struts...
I can make the problem go away by pulling up the dust cover off the shock and spreading lithium grease on it, but the clunk comes back after 1-2 weeks.

Now you have me suspicious. I had my tires rotated a few weeks ago, and although I don't exactly recall, I think the problem may have appeared around then. Time to get it looked at.

gl man. if it is the same problem as mine, it should be an easy fix. btw..the plate might not look like its bent, but it could be. i took it to MPJ and we thought my bushings were just shot. i put it on a lift at my high schools autoshop to relook everything again, and after taking the plate off, you could tell that it got tweeked by someone jacking my car up from there

yeah i have had my sti in the dealer for two strut clunk problems and it keeps coming back. they replaced two different struts for me. Both rears. Havent heard it from the rear but a few months ago my front right started doing it. It seems like a common problem with sti's. I am getting some megan coilovers soon. But i have just delt with it. After i got the struts repalced it always feels tighter when i pull away. Could just be in my head though. So..............not sure what it takes to permantly fix this problem. I have just delt with it the last few months.
