My Automatic Transmission SAVED my *** in court today...

So, as some of you know, I got a ticket for "Exhibition Of Speed"... The officer said I was fish tailing, and spinning my wheels (Briefly)... I was actually taking a corner a little to fast, and decided to drift it... anyway... in court today... He had me documented, stating that I "reved my engine, and poped the clutch" while in a corner, causing me to fishtail...

My rebuttle, was "I'm sorry... I have an automatic transmission, with 4WD, there is no possible way I could have done that".

They still got me for speeding though... but the misdemeanor was reduced to an infraction... 1 point, and $120 Vs like $700, and 2 points... Worked out pretty well for me.

Nice one, congrats!
Only $120 for speeding - nice. The last ticket I got was for running a stop sign in a parking lot: $270 plus traffic school costs.

No, that's the downfall... When you go to court, you automatically forfiet your right to go to traffic school... I don't have any points on my record... well, I have one now. Better than 2 I suppose.

Danno,

You screwed the pooch on that one man. I am pretty sure that you could have split the charges. I mean, to have taken the traffic school for the speeding(Infraction), and contested the Exhibition Of Speed (Class "A" Misdameanor) in a seperate trial. I am pretty sure that you could have done that.

At least you won on that heavy charge!

Good luck!,
Andy

Naw... I asked the DA if there was any possible way that I would be able to go to traffic school... he said no. The speeding ticket was just a reduction of misdameanor... so yeah. But I got lucky!

Dude, don't take this the wrong way, why did you chose an automatic rather than a 5MT? Being the enthusiast you are, I had always just assumed you would have a MT.

EDIT: oh and btw it looks like the new theme is back. saaweeeeet!!

Chose an automatic. It suites me better than a manual does. I don't drag race, so what's the point?

Okay, first off I'm not trying to argue or talk trash. Just wanted to make that clear.

Well, I was sooo happy when I finally was able to drive a car with a MT because it allows me to control the yaw of the car in corners with the throttle whereas when you've got an AT (that you can't operate manually) every time you step on the gas, the car has to hesitate and downshift. Also, you can't make the tail step out by letting off the throttle unless you can prevent the AT from upshifting when you let off.
When you are slowing down to enter a corner, you can't smoothly downshift to get the car in the right gear for the corner.

Of course MTs have their downfalls too. It takes forever to shift if you don't want to destroy your synchros (esp on our trannies), can't drive and do anything else at the same time (unless you've got skillz ), it's not that cool for just cruising. I'm sure there are others, but those are the main ones that i can think of.

I guess the ideal situation would be where you've got a Ferrari-like tranny that blips the throttle when you downshift and shifts with basically no hesitation whatsoever when you upshift. That would be awesome.

I think maybe you should drive the Subaru Automatic transmission... You can shift just as well as you can with a manual... Why do you think I got this ticket in the first place? I had it in second gear (Yes, it stays in second gear), nailed the turn, let off, and fanned the throttle, making me go sideways. I can toss my car around corners really easily.

I know you aren't trash talking... but you aren't making educated statements.. (not calling you dumb or anything), but if you drove the subaru 4EAT, you'd know that you can control the car, really, really well. It has yet to fail me.

ask any 4EAT guy on the boards, he'll tell you the same.

(There is a reason that 4EAT Subies do better than 5MT at autoX)

I did not know that. But then again (obviously) I haven't ever driven an RS or WRX with an AT. Only an OBS. And that thing just sucked. I guess you learn something every day.

Hopefully that will help ease my shock everytime I see an AT subie and just say "Why?"

And I've gotta sy I'm surprised that the ATs do better at autox. Are they better at the real track too? Somehow I doubt it but, at this point that doesn't really mean much.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I thought ATs caused a fair amount more drivetrain power loss. That can't help.

People say there is power drainage... but there isn't that much. Racing stock Vs Stock... well, both cars were pretty close to stock, in a straight line, Me, Vs 5MT, we were almost dead even.. He had like a tire length on me. That's only because he launched better. But yeah...

I will add this about the AT VS MT, the major down fall of the older Auto tranny is the torque split. It's somthing like 90/10 F/R

Also they Auto's get better gas milage. Shocking i know, Look it up yourself.

However i don't think the torque split is really a big deal the way Daniel drives, The boy has SkillZ!
