More great news.

Well.........

Since my tune two weeks ago or so. My car has had a pop sound coming from the engine. I figured since it was tuned 10:1 AFR that this is after burn from being really rich.
We test fitted the fmic and then reinstalled the tmic and was going to drive easy till I could get the car retuned. ( everyone is booked up north and south) Looking to have the zerosports guy tune the car now.
Well the car started miss firing on the nuber one cylinder last day and getting worse. My coworker spoke of my car blowing alot of oil out the tail pipe weds afternoon. This morning I go to investigate the problem. Upon pulling the plugs I see the worst fouled plugs I have ever seen from one of my cars.
Owning 60 + cars 5 of them being race cars over the years.
So I'm guessing having a leaking bov at the base, few other problems. And now a over rich AFR.

Upon leak down looks like my engine burned a valve. Which explaines the popping, crappy idle, blue smoke

I have a new engine going into my car.

Now I need to figure out what motor to buy.
Crawford?
Cosworth?
Anyone else recomend?
OEM short block?

Hell I guess I can build my own and flow my heads at the same time.
Any input on parts and motors?
Anyone with a rebuildable core they want to sell?

Yeah but pricey. I might just build something. And use some cosworth parts.

I just spent $500 buck yesterday on the car and bought a new ppg dogbox/ clutch for the car on monday.

This damn thing is costing some $$$
I still have to do the full harness swap (fire clean up) and replace my STi seats that will work with my airbag system.

Well it should be nice when its done.

I'm looking at
Closed deck block
H beam rods
JE pistons
Cosworth oil pump and timing belt guard
PE timing belt
Crankshaft clean up
bearings to my spec
ARP bolts
coating on the pistons and crank and rods.
Have it spun balenced to 9 -10k

The heads I'm going to flow test and build off of that.

I like cosworth stuff but its $$ and crawford I've heard some not so good things about them when searching.
Might be a good step by step for the baic'ers

i put a Crawford short block with rebuilt heads on my WRX and its been running stellar since then, I s'pose you can spend more money and maybe get a better engine, but I thought I would share that anyway.

Wish I had a chance to build a motor up, but it just wasn't in the budget

You haven't spent **** for dough. Your fun is just begining. You might want to think about selling the pretty motorcycle; brushing up on your Suby mechanic skills. You're gonna need it...

Honestly, your car is a money pit right now. Too much power and your reliability goes straight out the door. As for the Zerosports guy, he is coming either tomorrow or Monday or Tuesday and I think he's already booked solid for the 2 weeks that he's staying here. If u can get your new engine in and fix everything by then as well as make an appointment, good luck...

You should speak to Kevin at AutoHQ. He's putting in a fairly large hks turbo in his sti. He should have some input. And besides, u still need to go through him to make an appointment with the Zerosports tuner.

Cobb makes engines too. Don't know much about them though.

Man... it just keeps getting worse! I have an EJ257 core in good condition. I'll let it go for a good price so let me know if you're interested.

BTW, from the symptoms it sounds like a cracked ringland... I could be wrong but I don't believe a burned valve will generally burn oil.

Thanks

Hey, look at TurnWRX's input - if you got money you should talk to Kevin @autoHQ and see about having a Zerosports setup.

Kevin = former lead tech at Carslen Subaru and best OEM trained mechanic bar none
Kevin's tuner friend Aya Shiganori - Director of ECUtek Japan, and lead tuner of Zero/sports

I collect them I never sell them. Most mechanical things come very easy to me. I'm sure its not going to be a problem if I go that route.

I'll have to read up on them. They seem to be good on most their stuff. I wonder if I can get a mormon discount if I convert?

Yes.... I loved to work on my stuff. But my back and neck is still out which keeps me not doing much. I can spin wrenches but the heavy work will have to get farmed out.

My mr2 had a cracked ringland x4 It blew oil everywhere. So not to sure about that, On the leakdown it was blowing air out the exhaust and with the popping I think it s a valve. With the 2nd tune out of 4 from the one place my EGT's got warm as my tune saw my idc's go 103% It also looks to be coolant on one of the plugs. With the missing going on, I was also getting wastegate duty cycle cels with a few others.
Let me know what you want on the core.

He was on top of my list as my tuner. But two things. You cant polish a turd. So if its got mechanical problems...... you cant tune them out.
2nd. I'm really not liking ecutek and their lock out policy. I could have fixed my tuning problems before they hit this point had I been able to get at it. My delta dash doesnt let me.
I might go open source or Ap as they both allow me to have full control of my ecu. Had I known at the time I'd be locked. I'd never got it tuned with it.

I work with superflow and dynojet dynos almost everyday. I just with ecutek would grow up and let us tune our cars ourselfs. It might improve their dealer network.

Anyways... Time to sleep on it. Least I dont have a crankwalk mitsu...
