More 2.5 STI short block info...
here is a link to more info

Also, thought you guys would want to know that with the help of our engine builder, Crawford Performance, we can now get the new 2.5 STI block to work with USDM WRX heads. We keep the STi turbo crank and rods and use special forged Crawford pistons. These Crawford pistons keep the proper compression ratios that the wrx heads need to operate effectively. Without specially designed pistons in place of the STI pistons…the STI block will not work with the wrx heads.
With that in mind, we have been toying around with offering a Phase 1 STI short block with Crawford Pistons (see below pic) for those wrx owners who want a little more umph (displacement) to go with their current setup.
So we are just trying to get an idea how many people out there would like to see this product become a reality.

What's the projected price of this Phase 1 short block?

We are not locked into a price yet. With one run of pistons the prototype is a little expensive. We hope to get about 10 people interested so that we may buy in bulk. This would lower the cost an estimated several hundred dollars. Hopefully we can keep the whole kit around $3000. That price would reflect the new 2.5 STi block, disassembly and installation of the new Crawford pistons.

Stroker - We have quite a few pictures. let's see if we can find any that would suite your need.
Joe - We can give you more accurate numbers when the set-up gets dynoed. But, rest assured...there will be a tad more uuuummmpphh

Yeah new pics - http://www.i-speed.us/news/sti_parts.shtml
NSR500 - "Will this be more durable than your 2.4 "Good Boy" setup?"
That's a tough question. It would depend on how someone chooses to use it. If you ran it at low boost, changed the oil, and pretty much took care of any block...then it will last.
We have seen people blow 2.0's because they don't know how to tune. Then again we have seen a blown 2.4 because it wasn't being taken care of properly.
If you are seeking high (450 and up) consistent power output and you are just going to hammer on the thing, well... the closed deck will live longer. That is of course all things are taken care of properly (tuning and maintenance).
"In your estimated 3k figure, do you think you can include the headwork to run the USDM WRX heads in that price?"
We can always try. What exactly would you like to see in head work?

"All we are not impressed with much that we see except the rod and piston. They are the two pieces that everybody will want to replace with an aftermarket part. Oh well."

I just re-read the original post and saw that was the reason for the piston swap.
So...
Crawford Pistons + 2.5 STI SB = Yes USDM 2.0t heads
Completely stock 2.5 STI SB = No USDM 2.0t heads

The swapping of pistons is done to keep the compression lower than stock STi which in turn makes for safe and reliable power when using the USDM WRX heads.
We think it's safe to say that you can still use the wrx heads with the stock STI SB. However, the added increase in compression (over 10% from what they were designed for) will result in unhappy motoring (performance wise and of course head gasket wise).
