Kurlee, The jiu-jitsu instructor, Bobby Southworth, left AKA. Ralph Gracie black belt Dave Camarillo now teaches the jiu-jitsu class. You can check dave out at http://www.onthemat.com There may be some MMA classes coming out of Ralph's school in Mtn View since Ralph just came off a victory in Pride Bushido, but just hearsay at this point. Mike Roberts (certified muay thai instructor) teaches muay thai out of Claudio Franca's Santa Cruz Jiu Jitsu school.
Jive, BJ no longer trains at AKA. He trains at his own school in Hilo, HI. BJ's school has a full setup. Muay Thai bags, mats and a 30 foot octagon.

Hey thanks jive! And armlock, I'm sure you could tell by my posts here that BJJ is not exactly my cup of tea (okay I'll be honest, I hate it ). Like I said about Fairtex though, I think I'll wait on them a little bit to settle things down after the tragedy a few months ago. And remember folks, I wanna keep this as close to S.F./D.C. as possible.
BTW, jive it seems like we have a lot interests in common huh? Polynesian dancing and drumming, MMA, gold rims, NSX, what else? Oh, and did you see the spine on Super Street? "It ain't cool being no jive turkey so close to Thanksgiving."

any suggestions for a big guy looking to learn some things and get into shape and balance at the same time.
I was considering getting back into boxing but I'd like something more real...
Total beginner bro...and we're talking in the 240 pound range.....
Fremontish...or SFish.
don't want to go to some higher level session and get my *** either kicked or laughed at. Thanks.

Well, here's an update to revive this very old thread. I've just started training at a new(ish) gym called Fight and Fitness. I like it here a lot, skilled yet friendly instructors, small but immaculate, quality gym, friendly students. I've just started Muay Thai, and I'm thinking of checking out their BJJ/ground fighting class soon. Head instructor is Bunkerd Faphimai, 3-time world Muay Thai champ, Rajadmnern and Lumpini stadium champion, and all around modest, cool guy. Their website is www.fightandfitness.com , and they're located on Bryant between 5th and 6th Streets, a door down from my mechanic
BTW, does anyone have a good local source for Muay Thai gear? I'm especially looking for TDM (Thai Domestic Market) shorts by Twins or Windy, and I need wraps and 16 oz. gloves too. Other gear will come later when I'm given the green light to begin sparring; for now it's just learning Thanks guys!

Marshall, gimme a ring when you head down. The first lesson is great! It's like a free, one-hour private lesson with Boy Faphimai.
I usually go to the 6:30/7:30 session to dodge traffic
