Yeah you're suppose to do an engagement party. We didn't do one either...it's really just a ploy for gifts.
I would highly recommend doing a wedding shower. I believe the brides' parents are suppose to put it on. Mine did it with the bride's parents. Shoot I scored a stainless grill. Nuf' said.
Engagement photos are not a must but they are nice to have. They can be used in the invitations. On a website. An excuse to get some professional photos of you and the groom. We didn't have many.
My photographer was the wife of an i-club hero.....totally chance. And she did a hell of a job. Chris Lock's wife. If you want to see some of the engagement and wedding photos go to.... www.soontobemrandmrst.com
that's our wedding. Not that many up there. I need to update it.
if you've been engaged more than a couple months i wouldn't do the party. It'd almost come off tacky. It's really suppose to be celebration shortly after it happens...not mandatory. If you want to just do a little BBQ at your house and don't tell people to bring any gifts. Or put a price limit on it..make it fun. Say like $20. And DON'T invite anyone you 100% are inviting to the wedding....

well i am Chinese and my fiancee is Vietnamese so it's bit different on the party thing. We weren't going to do the engagement photos at first. We were only looking for a good photographer for the day of. But after we shopped around a bit finally saw my photographer's work, we decided to go for it.
Since we are Asian, we didn't do the party thing and not planning on it. However, I had to formally go to her house to see her parents with my family along with gifts and 'red envelop' (money). Then a very nice dinner with everybody after that. Next big 'party' would be the day of, where we'll have the ceremony (duh) then follow by a Chinese banquet.
Damn it's $$$$$$$$$$

Yeah, and in Chinese tradition the guy covers EVERYTHING!
And I feel like my mom has done enough for the first 18 years of my life so I am covering whole damn thing myself. I am just glad that my fiancee and her family are not too picky.
