lil help here please? (virus i think)
so i leave my computer on pretty much all the time, but i woke up yesterday morning and my computer was off. i thought nothing of it, tried to start it up, and got a wonderful "no OS found" message after the BIOS screen. great.
it then told me that my \windows\system32\config\system file was either missing or corrupt and that i should try to replace the file by using the repair function of the win xp cd-rom.
so i put in my XP Pro CD and restart. it starts loading all the drivers and important files and whatnot and then gives me 3 options. install XP, try to repair existing win XP installation using repair console, or one other thing that i forget right now.
so of course i tried to use the recovery console, but the first thing it does is ask me which windows installation i would like to repair. it will only accept one character. i tried all the letters and all the numbers, and the only one that does anything is the number one. unfortunately, it doesn't do anything to help me fix my computer. iirc, it just restarts the machine again, but i'll get more info on that in a minute.
the bottom line is that my machine is fubared. i'd prefer to keep the files i had on machine without having to reformat and reinstall win xp. does anybody know to get me out of this mess? i'm pretty good with computers (apparently not good enough in this case ) so you can talk to me using computer terms. any help would be much appreciated as i would rather not take my computer to some ***-clown who puts a floppy in it, performs one command, and proceeds to bend me over and take $500 from me.
i know you guys have REALLY been missing my presence for the last day or so, so please. help me like the stupid n00b that i am.

new HD, load windows, and anti-virus, all that stuff... then put the old HD as the 2nd one (via slave on the jumper or Cable select) and then pull your files off of it to the new drive.
now repartition the old one, and format it.
$50 (80-30 rebate) at best buy will get you a new 40gb HD.
