This is exactly why I don't pull into the carpool lane until KCBS starts in with the national news (happens at :30 and :00)

At least then it's not a my watch against his, it's CBS's watch and my watch against his.

Like you say it's dumb to get a $271 ticket over 5 minutes. But it sounds like you knew your watch was fast. It is kind of cheesy, but at the same time, if you did it and you knew you were 5 minutes too early, you made the conscious decision.
