Getting back on track - I thought about this for my wife too. She's more likely to carry a pen rather than a knife.

But at home, she wants a machete? I said no to that. For my own protection!

OC spray is probably a better idea. She's less likely to get that taken away and used against her.

The learning curve with a blade or "tactical pen" is much steeper than with something you just point and spray.

Understood. So the story behind that is that my sister-in-law used to carry a spray. And after about a year of sitting in her purse, it leaked out. She was cleaning it, and touched her face. Then tried washing her face... subsequently getting it into her eyes.

We laugh about it, but my wife doesn't want to go through that. I'll definitely mention it to her again though.

Well I guess that's a teachable moment about why you shouldn't touch your face and rub your eyes with OC spray on your hands.

the funniest thing to me about stuff like this isnt just that they even exsist, but the guys that buy them and sit around all day fantasizing about what completely implausible scenario they will find themselves in where their only chance for survival is to fight someone off with a $40 weaponized ball-point pen.

Its like when we were 8 years old and had a detailed battle plan and stashed sling shots around the house for not if, but WHEN, the ninjas finally ambushed us in our sleep.

Some guys just never seem to grow out of that i guess.

You are right that it's highly unlikely and likelyhood of success is very low.

You guys are blowing it way out of proportion, though. No one is sitting around dreaming about how invulnerable they will be with the tactical pen. Do people taking martial arts class sit around dreaming that they will because bad *** mother ****ers? Do people taking self defense classes then dream about how they will fight off attackers? Then what's so different about learning this stuff?

It's just a cool fricken pen. It's a cool thing to learn.

In all honesty I thought this thread was a joke.

People actually carry pens around in their pockets that come to a "point" for protection?? Lol protection from what? Unidentified Flying Documents that you don't want to sign??

If your that paranoid that you think your actually going to get jumped, beat up, car jacked, or w/e else your mind fantasizes about, just go get a damn dog or buy some pepper spray.

Probably better off just learning some practical hand to hand techniques
The liklihood of being attacked when you DO have access to this specific item and don't have access to say a kitchen knife is pretty low

For the record, Ev @ Academy of Self Defense (Santa Clara, San Jose, the Bay Area - California) did some Kuboton classes at one point
