Nitriding is a surface-hardening heat treatment that introduces nitrogen into the surface of steel at a temperature range (500 to 550°C or 930 to 1020°F), while it is in the ferrite condition. Thus, nitriding is similar to carburizing in that surface composition is altered, but different in that nitrogen is added into ferrite instead of austenite.

BUT you need supporting mods for this swap:

-turbo (at min STi or equivlant like VF34)
-injectors (at min 565cc but based on turbo size)
-Fuel Pump (walbro)
-EMS (Cobb AP is the way to go)
-Custom Tune (your choice)

-Noah
What would be the approximate gains from a setup like this?

you could expect apprx 270 ish whp and 290 ish tq AT MINIMUM with a hybrid setup running on 91 w/ simple bolt on VF34, 565cc injectors, fuel pump and custom tune....Each car is a little different and each tuner as well but thats about where we see them and again thats generally the min we see.

Is that with factory cats - up and downpipes? How much are we looking for this street legal setup parts + install if I bring MY02 wrx to your shop. Just want a idea.

Way cool! I was just reading about nitrogen in steels on wikipedia the other day because of the prevalent use on fishing boats. They use it because it can keep an edge (hardened) and resists corrosion (salt water).

Funny how it becomes applicable in all ways

No that would be with a catless up-pipe and full TBE system w/ or w/o high flow cat (on 91 catless TBE is not that big of a gain, generally its apprx 10-20 extra whp at most).

Street legal is a subjective term...your car stock is about as street legal as it comes.

Price depends on the parts used. If you have a bone stock setup (Literally no mods currently) and you do the full short block swap with proper mods, you need to plan for $7-8k+ at min. This is why most do setups in stages, i.e. stg 2, then turbo injector upgrade, tmic or fmic...then block swap as all those parts get to move over with that. starting from the begining is a HUGE upfront cost BUT it gets it all done in one shot and saves you a bunch of labor than doing it in stages.

You guys are getting cars to pass smog with a VF34 and stock exhaust? I was thinking about this the other day while pondering what route to take when my motor finally kicks the bucket. I was thinking stock STi swap and then wondered how the 34 would do instead of the 39.

Yes they pass...

go vf34 its a ball bearing turbo whereas the vf39 is not and the 34 has been designed so the housing does not crack (and all 39's do).

So sweet.

SOA does two things well.

1. Screw customers
2. Produce good parts (Every so often)
