No, T-Mobile is the only iPhone compatible network in the U.S. Even then, 3G isn't compatible -- using a 3G iPhone with T-Mobile will only net you Edge (2G) speeds.

If you want some details, let me know

Unfortunately no. The networks that AT&T & Verizon run off of are 2 different styles. An unlocked iPhone can be used on the T-Mobile network since it is the same as AT&T.

It's really too bad our Cell Phone services aren't setup like Europe to where you can select what phone you want, then select the carrier & plan. Sometimes conformity is a good thing.

Is this still the case? Tired of my G1 and don't really feel like shelling out $530 (actually it'd be $1060 cause the gf wants one too) on Nexus One's so I've been thinking about getting an iPhone 3G/S.

Does anyone have an iPhone on T-Mobile's service? Is there any restrictions on the T-Mobile network that you normally wouldn't have on AT&Ts?

yes, it's still the case. try not to update the iphone 3g/s to 3.1.3 since it's harder to unlock (need to use a Mac to jailbreak I believe). as far as I know everything will work the same as if the phone was on ATT network.

There aren't any restrictions that I've encountered. The thing is, T-Mobile's data plan costs $20-$25. With the iPhone, you'll only get Edge. I'd rather pay the $30 to get 3G on AT&T. There was an plan for $6 that gives you unlimited access -- I don't think this is available anymore.

Always research before updating your phone, especially if you need the unlock. The main concern about unlocking is that it requires a certain baseband. It may or may not be possible to downgrade the baseband.

The two common unlocking programs are:
ultrasn0w, requires baseband 4.26.xx or lower
blacksn0w, requires baseband of 5.11.xx or lower
(Settings -> General -> About -> Modem Firmware)

Note: The baseband isn't the same as the commonly known firmware version. However, chances are that when the firmware is updated, the baseband is also updated. Wikipedia is a good resource.

These statements might be outdated and only refer to the 3G, not necessarily to the 2G or 3GS. I don't stay updated with all the iPhone news.
