It would be a waste of money in California. Only really worth it in really cold climates.

You'd be surpised how much heatsoak there is on single pane glass, and how much heat loss from inside to outside there is as well.

If you buy the right windows, you get up to $1500 tax credit from the govt. I'm trying to get this done before 2010/govt $$ runs out. Came across a local company called Serious Windows that looks like the way to go.

Definitely go for the highest tech windows. I can testify to the effectiveness of the argon windows as we just had our house remodeled and it now stays almost 8 degree cooler during heatwaves. You will save on air conditioning (or at least be much more comfortable if you dont have air conditioning) and it adds value to the house.

argon filled is worthless.

Get double pane with LOW-E on both panes if possible.

And if you live in a noisy area, get STC glass (Sound transmission control) It helps greatly.

I worked for a window companyh for 4 years =)

LOW-E Is a coating that goes between the panes which insulates the windows more.

It will almost look like a light tint, but it is great and keeping the home insulated.

Serious Windows has a bunch of info on their website about the energy efficient tax credit , http://www.seriouswindows.com/html/taxcredit.html .

Officer Flatline, what window company did you work for?

P.S. - Double Payne....
