With all due respect, you have sort of a holier than thou attitude about this. If broke/poor people bother you that much, I don't know what to tell you. It's their lives. They have as much right to live the way they want as you do. We don't get to change the rules just because we don't like how other people spend their own money.

Has anyone taken into account the cost of living? Not that I care about #s cause thats all they are, but I make 53k annually. My fiance is home with baby taking care of her because it has less of a financial impact for her to not work than to pay for a sitter, not to mention the ability to really raise and be with your child. So after tax on my income how could I afford to buy a home here and have any quality of life outside that? After paying for my daughters medical I take home about 2700/mo cash. Tell me. How is it possible. Forget the immigrants. How about us who make good money, aren't new immigrants and can't do it!
I did the math bro..a mortgage on a 600k home is $3800/mo and property taxes are about what 10k a year. So you're looking at $4633/mo to be able to cover just the mortgage and property taxes when they come. How about food, PG&E, water, garbage, telephone, tv, car payment, insurance, maintenance, gas, and having a few dollars to be able to enjoy life after you literally worked as a slave to pay on that house for the next 30 years. BTW thats just getting a decent house in a decent neighborhood around here.

US born armericans have had the chance to succeed since they were born here.
immigrants that come from somewhere where its 'tougher to make it' will take more advantage of the opportunity i think.
thats how i see it i guess

Holier than thou?? I'm **** poor dude, my rents are the ones who worked hard to be doing well today. I'm just lucky really that I could even make it this far.
I was just wondering how generations can't make it, but immigrants seem to make it just fine, and in just 20-30 years.
There isn't a science to it, I know this.

That's funny, cuz I think that f****** farmer is doing more hard labor yet making less than your asses sitting around at some office desk.
I bet you dont know the meaning of hard labor, everyone sittin doin mechanics and what not, and there is some person workin a farm for 12-18 hrs a day and has no benefits and coverage.
It's call racism.
That lazier fact is a load of BS. You tell me you do back breaking work in the sun all day for that many hrs and call that LAZY? Yea, it's just our industry is stupid, basis people on SOME intelligents, but not a lot.
Myspace and facebook musta sure as hell been super INTELLIGENT... i mean those guys are millionaires. I bet they would die picking grapes on a farm.
The American Dream is a false hope. If you're good at business, that's where the money is at. All economies need a business or type of business (Might not be called that) whether it's importing or exporting drugs, or rice, or whatever. That's business. If you can land a spot n' work yourself around then you're alright.
But it all depends on your skills with communications with others. Bill Clinton could lie like he did and make the whole world believe his side and lead us to hell, but his speeches were very persuasive.
And of course unless you're very well educated in sciences and health issues, most are probably not using their degree at all.
Actually in my opinion, a degree isn't about WHAT you know, it's testing whether you can withstand to do something that is extremely boring and still be proficient at the job.
Not every little detail of learning will make you interested in it, but being able to bust out A's to show that you can still do the work that is boring in a well manner is what a degree is to me. Jobs are usually repetitive and don't change too much, yet if you can do a good job at it, you'll be hired a lot easier. Lotsa jobs are well paid out there without having to have a degree.
My cousin who is a pharmacist said he doesn't use his biology degree at all from UCLA, he only uses 10-15% of his pharmacy school education, and there he is making $70/hr easy.
Take a few classes with that education of yours, like Multicultural Psychology or Cross Cultural Psychology and watch a few educational videos to get a good idea of how lopsided things are.
For instance. The exact SAME resume is used. But the names are changed from a White name to a Black name.
The white name gets called back 80% more than the black name. Weird isn't it? Without seeing a face, people judge. Without hearing your voice, people judge.
What's even funnier that I remember was that a Regular black guy would get a call back 12% of the time, compared to a WHITE guy with a CRIMINAL RECORD getting calls back 15% of the time.
Now is THAT NOT lopsided?
America believes in being "Unique" but to me, Unique is just a daughter of "Racism"

So for a fixed 30yr at 6.34% with 3% down ($9000) you'd have a payment of about $2050/mo including taxes.
That's here in Union City, so that doesn't work for a lot of folks in terms of commute, but I think you see my point. It's a quite area, older, but at least everything is pretty darn close by including both elementary and middle schools (1/2mi away).
It may not work out for most of us, but it's not as bad as it may seem. There are a lot of deals right now, and there will be more over the next 1-2 years.

Sure, he couldn't have started the almond farm without the money saved up from being a doctor, but he also had to pay off huge loans to get there, and work hard. It's completely doable. I don't believe that the American Dream is a sham or unobtainable.
They pay their workers really well, and even let them live in the farm house.

I will say I'm tired of people complaining about racism. Its old news, and beat to death. Not to mention a huge excuse for people to use when they fail. When I hear case by case racism that's when I listen. This generalization of racism being so rampant is about as ignorant as racism itself IMO. Keep in mind its not always a persons color that has to do with people not preferring to employ them. It has a lot to do with their social interaction with people and how they carry themselves. And yes certain groups in all races act a certain way to live up to stereotypes quite often.

Racism is still very much an issue though. I think it's not going to go away any time soon unfortunately. A lot of people just hate other people for no real reason, just because of their color, or where the came from. sad.

Those are definitely steep numbers. 600k gets you a pretty decent home in Union City where I live, but 300k gets you a home at about 1035 sq ft with 3bed/2bath and garage, at about 30yrs old.
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/25001415_zpid
So for a fixed 30yr at 6.34% with 3% down ($9000) you'd have a payment of about $2050/mo including taxes.
That's here in Union City, so that doesn't work for a lot of folks in terms of commute, but I think you see my point. It's a quite area, older, but at least everything is pretty darn close by including both elementary and middle schools (1/2mi away).
It may not work out for most of us, but it's not as bad as it may seem. There are a lot of deals right now, and there will be more over the next 1-2 years.

Well Gagan, there's more to it than just the commute. Its the fact that alot of us from the Peninsula want nothing to do with the east bay. Hate to say it, but the people in the east bay are the biggest reason.
I think the 300k home calculating out to $2050/mo mortgage+taxes is very conservative. Take into account that many lenders require you have homeowners insurance to cover their asset until its paid off. If you own property and don't have insurance you're a fool anyhow.
Gagan, if I may ask....do you own and or are you buying a home? If so did your family co-sign, help with the down payment, and will they be there to support you if you were to lose your source of income and not be able to pay your mortgage? Do you have any children or other financial obligations?
I hate to be so personal on a public forum, but I'm trying to get at how you make it seem like everyone should be doing it. Cause if that's how you see it you should be doing it yourself. And not that Joe is or was a bad employer, but last time I checked working for SubyDude probably didn't provide the income to buy a house with around here. I think you've left working there, but just saying.
Im not trying to provoke an argument, so I apologize if it comes across that way. Just trying to level the playing field.

Racism is still a huge issue, and it does play a huge factor in the work force, Sorry but as much as we try to "not look at the color of your skin" you'd just be ignorant to think in reality that everyone here is playing 100% fair and everyone has a fair chance. It's like genetics, some people can build muscle easier than others.
There are lots of smart people who know this, but then there are lots who don't or in reality REALLY DONT CARE.
Tired of complaining about racism, I think Barack Obama said somethin like... Sure we're fair now, we are equal now. But if you're still benefiting from then, then it's the exact same as it was then, until you give up your own benefits.
Of course the ignorant people of America just wont do, cuz people will still be payin for those 120-200dollar jordans and those people are still going to be greedy and those people are
Fact #1 Racism will always exist
Fact #2 Because Racism will always exist, the opportunities from one to another will always be different.
For example, Michael Phelps. His body wasn't as chizzled as it is, but it was in good enough shape and he had a strong will to want to be the best, so he worked his way there.
Me on the other hand a 5'7 average asian, would be laughed at if I told them I wanted to be an Olympic Champ in the butterfly.
White dude with a white name (especially with a name that has huge $$ history tied to it) like A Bush, Kennedy, Reagan. Gets the way paved for them.
For instance... I forgot the senators name, but his 2 sons were C average students. C average students who got into... Princeton? Not only did they attend an Ivy League College, they joined the effin' FOOD CLUB? I'm sure we're a little more hard working than they were, and yet they will have access to businesses n' management without doing anything.
For every upper classmen, there are a boat load poverty stricken people to make that wealth for the upperclassman he doesn't make that much money without having a workforce do the load for him
Walmart CEO for example is the richest dude in the world, but wow their jobs at the low end stores are horribly slave jobs, and they aren't white, the white guys are in collars chillin at the top.
There are lots of smart people who know this, but then there are lots who don't or in reality REALLY DONT CARE.

I have no idea where this thread is going. There's no shame in being middle class, or even further down the chain. People do what they wanna do.

how many white ( and i will include black ) people do you see sitting at Home Depot, looking for work. Now, how many white ( and again, ill include black ) people do you see in the welfare/foodstamp/help my lazy *** line? how many white/black people do you see working three or four jobs? that should be the barometer right there.
for some reason, latin/asians/europeans are instilled on the hardworking/succesful life ethic sooner than here. matter of fact, i dont even see that at all here.........

As far as history, not everybody can stay in one place. I grew up in Philly for 13 years. My parents owned their house there for about 15-16 years. Mostly on one salary as my mom had to stay home to watch me and my brother while getting my oldest brother to school. In '93 my parents had the chance to move to Southern California and jumped on it. But homes were and still are ridiculously expensive. And my Dad's job was a construction based job. After 5 years, the project was over and we had to move again to where the next job was. Over the next 4 years, my parents were in San Diego for 8 months, Puerto Rico for 4 months, and then back on the East Coast for 3 years before we moved back here to Northern California. Again, home prices through the roof. Makes it difficult to buy.
So not everybody can go to one place and stay there for 30 years and pay off a mortgage. There are some extenuating circumstances that can force families to have to move and what you sold your previous house for may not even be enough of a downpayment for a new house where you have to move too. And once you get into a cycle of renting, it's extremely difficult to get out of it.
But also consumerism plays a major role. I will say that a lot of American born people all aspire to have the best this and the best that. Money doesn't play a thought. You want it, so you buy it and deal with the consequences afterwards.
