If you were limited to owning 1 rifle, what would you buy?
Hello all,
I have a friend who has been dying to own a gun for years and years... Well his wife finally gave in and is allowing him to purchase a single rifle! One rifle is better than no rifle.
Here are the guildlines:
Budget: Under $2,500
Use: Mainly target shooting, but wants enough power to take down medium sized game (deer and possibly bears) for the occasional hunt.
He's not super into guns, just wants the best all around performer for under $2,500 that he doesn't have to do much to.
He's not into the idea of having an AR-15 because of the small caliber round, and he's not into swapping receivers and mags for caliber changes.
I suggested he get a nicely loaded M1A, perhaps even an M21! Though I know there are many other options from many seasoned gunnies. Lets hear your advice!
I chose the M1A because it's accurate as all hell, magazine fed, shoots .308 which is plenty to take down deer, and is perfect for long distances down range.
For the newbies that don't know what an M1A or M21 is, here they are in all their glory.
M1A Loaded Model:
M1A White Feather (M21)

I personally have always loved the .270. I hunt with 125 grain rounds and have almost no drop between 100yds and 200yds and I have dropped a running buck at 350 with a 150grn full copper bullet. It has great range and plenty of take down power. A very flat shooting gun.
My Remmington 270 pump is my baby. I hope to someday use it to take down a BC Caribou
If he is indecisive he could trade in the amophobic wife for a riflephilic one. Just my $.02

Dude.
Thank you for being so descriptive.
Under those constraints I would deffinately be on the M1a Band wagon.
You can get the basic with a bull barrell for 1600-1800 bucks sometimes cheaper and use the rest of the money for add ons and optics.....

What about an AR-10? Also shoots .308 and has the ability to change to other (read: cheaper) calibers for target plinking. My other suggestion would be a high end Remington model 700. Why spend the full $2500 if you don't have to?

I have always wanted a socom II I have never shot one so I can make no claims as to how it performs. It looks like it would be a great "1 rifle" rifle.
I have shot many M1a however. It would certainly be a good choice.

Honistly,
I would go with a good Rem 700 or Win 70 chambered in .270, its about the most universal of all rounds, good for hunting, not too much money to shoot, and for a budget of 2500 he could get a VERY good rifle, with a top end lepold or ziest scope on it.

Thinking same thing???
AK-47 is my new favorite so would have been my first choice if HUNTING dear and bear was NOT involved.
If I was more into cameras and crap I would post pics of my AK but im old and dont really feel like it.
Main reason for the switch from my M-4 was so I could fire russian crap brown bear or wolf out of it all day and not care.
