You have a good point with the contrast between urban and nature. Historically, you really can't beat the east coast. There are many iconic manmade landmarks there.

But that is it. I still vote for California. We need 2 weeks worth of tourism. Let's go with museums. The Getty, De Young, SF MOMA, Legion of Honor, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.

History: Yosemite, Carmel, anything in 49er country, San Francisco, LA, Hollywood.

Mentioning Hollywood, someone from out of the country would likely be very curious about that. They would want to see were a lot of these iconic movies have been made.

Yes, there are many equals in New York, and Washington DC, but DC completely lacks anything outdoorsy, and really, New York lacks the vast beauty that California has. Yosemite, Lassen, Shasta, Point Reyes, shoot, just drive down 395 from 108 and you will see some of the most spectacular range of mountains I have ever seen. And as a side note, SF has such a beautiful skyline.

And one last note, I can only say this from first hand experience, but California has the most cultures mixed into the state. A foreigner that maybe has not seen what some groups of people are like. Their traditions, their food. I really don't think any state has even close to what California has.

(in reality, you can't go wrong with either NY or CA, but come on, CA is awesome and we all know it.

I'd say Pennsylvania, Philly and Pittsburgh, lots of historical sites, and the people are really pleasant. Though I think time of year would be important to decide something like this, 'cuz depending on where you're talking about it may be intolerable. (East Coast during the height of summer is pure misery)

I would say California hands down.

Only other states I would even consider would be Penn, NY, Mass, Tx.

Problem with Texas... too far between major land marks. Problem with NY... twin towers are gone and it's a LOT of city and expensive. You'd have upstate, the statue, some other cool stuff but I think Penn would be better for that.

If you hit the east coast you really wouldn't be stuck to one state. You could do 3/4 in the time you'd do California. If you were coming in fall I'd say the east coast. Nothing beats the changing of the colors in fall over there. AMAZING.


So... 1st choice California. 2nd choice... the east coast in general.

I was in a band and toured like 26 states in a couple months. I had never been to Cali until then, and it was by far the best.
