Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
I've seen a mid 80's GTI on Redmond (in between Almaden and Camden) for the last few weeks...someone has painted "$800" and 16V on the windows with white shoe polish. I have no idea what kind of running condition it is in...5 bills is probably not going to buy you much in terms of reliability before you have to dump another 5 into it.
Although...9 years ago I bought a '75 Valiant from a retired couple for $800. That thing was a hoopty but it was good to go!

Have you checked craigslist.org? Go to the cars/trucks part, and type in 500 as the price limit. Its mostly parts and wheels, but theres a few cars mixed in there. I saw a few Fords for 500.

$500?!?! Man, thats rough. I got an '86 MR2 for $500 three years ago. It ran, but I had to replace the head gasket and pretty much all the gasgets on the block, the entire exhuast system and the front rotors, so it was on jackstands for about a month and in the end it cost around $1200 and I only sold it for $800. Oh well.
I saw a 2WD Justy for $600 once. I think you can get an early $80's Inpulse for well under $1K, but I would say go with craigslist.org, since there's so much random stuff there.
