When I was sailing with my school, we stopped at Saipan and it just so happened to be the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb (2005). Saipan was where the Anola Gay flew out of and it was pretty interesting because all of the top military brass were on the island. Me and a few of my friends went to the ceremony and were lucky enough to hear the stories of many of the people who fought in the war especially the Pacific.

I just wonder how history will remember the soldiers of today, especially with the way things seems to be headed.

My uncle served was in the Battle of The Bulge and had some stories I'll never forget. My Mom telling me of the flashbacks and dreams after he got home are unreal.

My great uncle, Peter Masters, was a British commando that landed at Normandy.
He was an Austrian Jew that got a little "payback".

Here's his story & obituary.

No soldier enjoys killing.
They may get caught up in the moment, but at best, they are neutral.

correction: ENOLA GAY. which was the name of the mother of COL PAUL TIBBETTS (may he RIP). the pilot of the first bomb mission.

a few years ago, i heard around 8000 of the WWII vets are dying on a daily basis due to their age...

what's sad is that their history is losing out to paris hilton, american idol, etc...

Their history will always remain. However, every war has it's share of ordinary men in extrodinary situations which all deserve their place in history.

Relevance to pop culture doesn't have anything to do with it. Times change and America has a very short memory.

Awesome!

In HS I created webpages about vets. It was great interviewing them and I love talking to vets.

My issue issue with modern day pop culture is that it has replaced a working knowledge of historical events. Most people's idea of history is who won American Idol 3 seasons ago. Hell, try to get most people under 30, or a lot over 30 for that matter, to identify the countries we're currently at war with on a map. Not a good future for America when looked at in this light.

I worked with a non-profit that contributes to a national effort to tell the stories of vets. I used to once in awhile have lunch with a bunch of retired deputy sheriffs who were vets from different wars and used to hear all kinds of experiences. Take a look: http://digiclub.org/sofs/
