i got a ticket and i need some advice

hello all, i am in need of some advice ( i am a total noob, this is my first ticket) i was speeding, going 75 in a 65, and i want to take traffic school. I believe traffic school is NOT an optioon for me, unless i get special approval from the courts, but my main question is, how much will my ticket be (ballpark figure)?

i know this question is dumb, but i can kind of short on money, so does anyone have any information?

Thanks,
Michael

Got a traffic ticket, eh? You should really stop racing on the freeway. LOL. In all seriousness, u got a ticket for going 75? What kind of chp **** did you run across? Must be cause its the end of the month and they're trying to meet their supposed quotas. Thats the only reason i can think of because 75 is the minimum speed they can fine you at.

However, you're in luck. You can take traffic school if you meet the following requirements:

1. You have a valid california license.
2. You have not attended traffic school in the past 18mos.
3. The violation was a moving violation and, if speeding, does not exceed the posted speed limit by 20mph.
4. The viloation is not alcohol or drug related.

You'll get all the info when you get you're ticket in the mail. I was going 84 in a 65 zone but the "nice" officer just gave me a ticket for 75. The ticket was $86 plus $34 adiministration fee for traffic school and plus whatever you pay for the traffic school itself. I recommend taking traffic school online. Taking traffic school wipes the ticket clean from your DMV record plus its really easy.

BTW, where did you get your ticket at? You damn racer boy!

They had a great article in SCC on how to beat the tickets.

Let me guess, pay the ticket plus and extra dollar or two, and then never cash the check they send back so that the transaction is never complete and won't go on your record

You can go to traffic school and you should. Otherwise you'll have a point on your license for 3 years. You insurance will go up a bit for as long as you have the point. You still have to pay the ticket even if you go to traffic school.

You might want to consider fighting it. I've heard that fighting it means you don't get to go to traffic school - please find out and let us know.

There is a very good book by the Nolo press "Fight Your Ticket in California" available on Amazon for $22. There is also a ton of useful info on their site, including articles "Traffic School Best Place for Speeding Student" and "Making Quick Work of a Speeding Charge"

If you do go to traffic school then you have to drive like a granny for the next 18 mo. If you get another ticket your point comes back AND you now have 2 points and it's really going to cost you.

Hope this helps.

Keep us posted.

Thumbs up

1. The "make a check out for $2 more" thing doesn't work. Trust me, once you pay the amount they're applying your ticket regardless of whether you care about cashing a $2 check or not (I doubt you'll even get that check half the time).

2. You can get legally ticketed for any speed over the posted maximum speed - 56 in a 55 is perfectly legal, though you will likely have more sympathy from the judge in such a case.

3. Important lesson: never make the arresting officer nervous. I think routine traffic stops are among the most dangerous and unnerving things they do. Remember Polly Klaas? It's not uncommon for cops to stop people on routine stops who just happen to be criminals with open warrants - these people are nervous and think they're caught, and don't keep their cool long enough to get a speeding ticket. Reach under the seat or into the glove compartment and bam.

Check with your insurance company - I think some have a "good driver discount" that allows you a single one traffic-related ticket on your record

good driver discount. Yes I have that and allready have one point and it did not raise my rates. Now, ideally i should be able to get traffic school for this recent ticket and still see no increase in rates.

p.s. Im 44 and can get that "good driver discount" I dunno if it works for the younger bros, you younger guys get nailed "worse' by the insurance racket...um I mean bisness

I don't think there's any place in the Vehicle Code where it says you can't take traffic school if you're going 20 over. I've looked.

You may have to appear in court to request permission to attend traffic school, but I guarantee that they'll say yes.

I got a ticket a few months ago and they sent me a letter which lists all the requirements for traffic school. I dont know if there are different requirements for each court but thats what they sent me...

Interesting.. I know that I've been allowed to attend traffic school to dismiss a ticket that was more than 20 over.

I did have to appear in court to request it, but the judge didn't even give it a second thought before saying yes.
