Done got money back, if you think about it you really would want to have to pay money at tax time.....its an interest free loan for up to a year. (be it a very small loan), if you are getting money back, then congradulations you've given the federal/state govt an interest free loan.

then, since its your first time filing for yourself (that is if your parents don't claim you as a dependent) it should be fairly straight forward. you should be able to use the 1040EZ form and if you have your W2 it should be clear sailing. there ane at least 40 different websites that actually do the filing of your tax and while some will do it for free, the probably won't exactly be a joy to work with. the way i see it, the last thing i need at this point is to get audited, so i just paid $40 for one of the better sites and got it done right. there was live 1-on-1 chat with a guy who really knew what he was talking about and he was able to answer any questions i threw at him so it was actually pretty easy. good luck.
oh and o, since i just started work in september and i don't make shlt in the first place i'm only getting about $500.

Thanks for the site and info. I've been filing as independent for the past 4 years already... does that make a difference? I think I am going to end up paying someone to do it for me just to make sure. But I want to follow the paperwork so I know what the hell is going on. I think it's about time for me to know... Thanks again!

Now to answer Gino... I just hit the send button last night and I'm getting a return... a whopping big return. Being unemployed has moved me into a lower tax bracket! I was also able to claim some educational bucks as well.
Cheers, Joe
Somebody hire me already!

Ya, get Turbo Tax, not only is it only $30 after the rebates, including the State Module, it is fully deductable! And they will refund your IRS e-file fee ($14.95).
I'm waiting on my nice fat check. Hmm, VF23, injectors, fuel pump or some more stock that will be worth even less this time next year?

For me the hard part isn't filling out the form so much as finding basis for stocks that split/changed names, etc... itemizing, crap like that.
For anyone who can use an EZ form, do it yourself, it's VERY easy at that stage.
I know I'll be getting a fair amount back, but that's because I claimed 0 all last year and also sold a bunch of loser stocks. My losses will probably hit the max, and carry over to this year. Good thing too, because I'll be selling some winner this year
As for software, I heard Turbo Tax implemented a copy protection scheme that writes to your BOOT SECTOR.
People are having serious problems on dual boot systems (boot loaders no longer work, and if your system uses one, the program may render your computer unbootable unless you know what you're doing) and even some normal Windows users are having problems using the software. Avoid that, get Tax Cut if you want software. I've used Tax cut for several years, and it works fine.
There is quite a discussion on the topic at Slashdot: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...thread&tid=185
As a consumer I don't want to encourage companies who make software that writes to critical areas of my hard drive, especially when they try to do so secretly. I encourage others to boycott Turbo Tax for this reason alone.
